Very nice catch, Kim. What surprises me a little is the surprisingly good DOF you have with this lens. Are you sure it's the 80-200? Whenever I use that same lens, DOF is usually not good at all. And I use it on a tripod and stopped quite a ways down. This was taken at f/4, so the people in the background should not be this sharp. Maybe I am missing something. A very good photo for sure!

I like this. The sepia works well for this kind of capture. Nice.

A nice colorful scene here that is also well composed. I'd only suggest trying a little darker frame to allow the colors to stand out better.

Just saw this one. A much better crop, IMO. Beautiful colors and nicely composed keeping the stamen just off center. My only suggestion is that I'd like to see a little more depth of field so that all of the center area is in focus. Using a tripod, if possible, and stopping down a little will give you that better DOF. Very Nice image!

A beautiful flower here, plus I like your DOF in this photo. But, the crop does not quite work for me here. Both of the bottom corners are somewhat distracting from the flower itself. A crop might help or a different angle altogether. Just my .02... All the best, Vince

Here is a crop from a longer exposure of the same location. Perhaps several seconds long.

Thanks for the comment Sophie. Yes this is probably close to 1/5 of a second as well. But the closest Usefilm gives you is 1/15 of a second or 1 second.
I also have one from this shoot where I went perhaps close to five full seconds, and will edit and post that soon to compare. Though the water is much more dream and silk-like, it does lack the added texture you see here. I have found many times now that I seem to not care as much for the really long waterfall/stream exposures. Oftentimes just looking like a bed of white. Thanks again. Best, Vince

Let's hope that when Jesus arrives like this he will find all of us as righteous and morally upright and decent people.

Nice capture Sunset man!

"That one green leaf is refusing to let go of summer"..

THAT is a great observation KIm. I never thought of it that way. You are right. Thanks for stopping by and the same goes for all of you that shared your thoughts on this photo.

Aloha,
Vince

Very intimate portrait, Kim. While I am not the greatest fan of natural lighting for portrait work (can seem somewhat harsh, IMO), in this case you have done a very good job with it. I do believe this very same scene, with much less lighting would be even better though.

But a very good job overall here! Nice to see we are both still around and kicking on Usefilm.

Very rapture-ish. But I'd like a little more brightness on the bottom.

Or at least to see Jesus...

Thanks for the comments. Sunset Man, how's life on Oahu coming along? I hope you and yours are great!

Like the attached version. Just doubt I'll ever see one of those "junked" in a firld somewhere.

But if I did...

I cropped the top low because there was just overcast white conditions in the left top of the photo. Was overpowering the scene actually.

But I do have plenty with all angles and crops possible.

Thanks again to all for taking the time.

A hui hou, (see ya around)

A very nice scene and colors here. But far to over-sharpened. There is also some dirt and debris around the sun and sky that needs to be cleaned out.

Thanks for the honest post Kim. I just feel like this one works best just as I captured it with a little ambiance for mood. I could lighten it up (and have tried). But it loses some atmosphere in the process, IMO.

It's nice to see you too. It has been a while! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. Aloha.

Here is an unedited version with the people. I like both. But for fine art, I think the one without the people would do better. Opinions always appreciated.

Bet you could use a bit of that warmth and sunshine about now...

The key to capturing ocean colors like this are three things:

1- A polarizer is a MUST.

2- Shooting at mid-day is against most photographic rules; but is essential for images like this here where there is water. It intensifies the colors dramatically.

3- And despite year round warmth, shooting in the middle of the summer, when the sun is at its very highest and brightest, makes a very noticable difference.

I took this image in the beginning of August, at about 1 pm, with a polarizer.

I always use Velvia 50, as well, which is sure to soak up everything presented.

Thanks for the comments!

Thanks for the comments. Very few scenes have impacted me as when I saw this actual location, at dusk, for the very first time. Seriously, a mind-boggling effect to say the least. After dusk the sky turns black and you get a nice night-time shot, though nothing like those few moments of twilight when you have both the lights of Waikiki and a lit up sky. Thanks again.

Thanks for the comments.

"How'd you know which shutter speed to use? Or did you take multiple shots?"

**** Basically this was at the very end of my shoot. I was tired and more or less just trying to finish up a roll. I did take a few like this and was almost stunned by how well they turned out. The lighting was not near this good through my viewfinder. Like I said, the camera can see, and film can capture much more than what the naked eye sees. This image is proof for me.

"You can't beat film for long exposures."

**** True in the past, IMO. But the digital cameras out there today are far better than anything prior when it comes to noise. I still find with darker scenes, even with film, noise (or in the case with film, GRAIN) can still be an issue.

I just prefer the natural feel that comes with working with film today. Seems more organic-like. Though I believe its days are indeed numbered. Thanks again for all of your comments.

All the best,
Vince
