Thanks for the comments! I will be adding 2-3 more images from Yellowstone over the next few days - including at least one more geyser.

Thanks for your comments on this and a couple of other photos of mine. This is one of the more humourous photographs that I've taken. Cheers!

Thanks for the compliment Pat!

In answer to your question - they're still shy. I need to be careful not to disturb them, particularly in the winter. When they're in a tree, I have found that I can get to within 50-100 feet of the tree before they get too nervous -- but when they're on the rocks by the sea, I can't get within 75-100 yards without spooking them. This photo was taken last summer when I ducked around some of the natural cover. 400mm lens (plus Canon 10D 1.6 multiplier) helps a lot and I've used houses and cars as blinds too.

Cheers,
Matt

Thanks for the note!

I do have one more on the same rock in my library of images on Usefilm. And, the same picture can be found (with other eagle photos from the San Juan Islands) at http://www.theragens.com/photos/albums/Eagles/Bald_Eagle_20 04-03.htm.

Thanks. I bracketed the exposure just to make sure that I got at least one good image.

Thanks Adam. I actually tried both suggestions on framing (before I posted!) and found that neither helped. Just using the water and sky resulted in a ghost boat that had nothing to contrast against; the result was flabby and weak and not much of an image. On the other hand, given the shoreline, the rocks only filled the lower left portion of the screen and I didn't have much to work with. Using more rocks overbalanced the picture even more. The cropped result that I published was the happy midpoint I could come up with -- the best balance I could get unless I resort to Photoshop gimmicks and simply "add" a few rocks from unused parts of the image to the bottom right corner of the print.
