Since you asked . . . The idea of this image probably is more interesting than the image itself. The fur is certainly attractive, but the picture leaves doubt as to where that interest resides. The focus seems to be on the top of the head, and area that no particular distinction. It is pretty much the same as the rest of image. If the color and texture of the fur were the point, then a much deeper dof and the more strongly directional light would set it off and give it more dimension and visual importance. As the shot is framed, the face itself draws the eye. Perhaps an extreme closeup, with the sharpest focus on the nose(a pretty good rule for animals) and cropped to just above the eyes would be much more effective. Good luck and thanks for the submission. As you might suspect, this critique is as much advice for me as for you. :-)

Hello, Pankaj. I'm afraid New Jersey is almost 800 miles from Charleston, SC. I haven't been active on Usefilm for a while and have moved on to another site. I don't know if UF has a way to locate members by state, but there was an effort to make contacts like that shortly before I left. Perhaps the site administrator can be of soem help. Yep, this is a real beauty. The mist is especially well-rendered--difficult effect to pull off, too. I love the effect but can't help wondering what a cooler toning color would do. Great stuff!

Thanks for the good close analysis, Omar. I know you're right about the technical elements of film (especially the antique) and digital. About the best we can hope for is an approximation, I guess. The eyeglasses, though, are not completely out of place, although they would have been rare for an ordinary soldier of the period. John Loreaux's observation about the haircut (of the guy in the right foreground) is right on, though. Good thing about your comment (and the others) is that it invites closer observation. That is a wonderful value of such an exercise. Thanks again. --g

A very strong image. One might suppose that with the high contrast and the welter of converging/diverging lines that the effect would be nervous and excited. Quite the contrary, it is quite serene. I think it has to do with the dominant triangular shape that is so well grounded and stable. In any case, it is powerful and attractive. Well done. . .

A great story and a wonderful portrait. He looks a bit like a street tough--with those spiky feathers and the bold colors. Great detail on the log, too. Very nice capture--even if he's not in flight! ;-)
