Thanks for the comments. :-) This one was like Galen Rowell would say, envision it, then shoot it. I saw the road... the nice curve and hill in the road... the red sumac... and the cloudy day, intensifying the red color. And there was an Amish auction going on down the road. I immediately knew I had to get a shot of a buggy going down that road, so scoped out the angles and waited, which took a little while. Also, the Amish really don't want their photos taken, feeling a "graven image" steals their soul. So I was restricted to shooting it as the buggy was going away. It seems there's a standard that it's OK to shoot them as a journalist if you don't get their faces. Thanks again!

Lookit those studs!!! OK, perfect shot, except... would like to have it totally uniform. That would mean no space between Bill and Sai. Then they would have totally looked like "Mod Gawd Squad" guys ... or something like that. LOL! ;-)

OK, it was between 2 and 4 seconds. I forget what the camera said, kept changing. I averaged that to 3. lol (the truth comes out)

I might have some shots with some blurry action. Will look.

How did I happen to be there? LOL! I was covering the City Council meeting in a small town (yes, I AM a journalist) Of 5 on Council, only 3 were there. Then, one of them gets a call from the fire dept., cuz he's a volunteer fireman. BINGO! Meeting done immediately; no longer a quorum. LOL! So I heard where the fire was and had the camera with... and I WENT.

I climbed through trees and down a scrubby, steep slope to try to shoot from above. There wasn't much real action, so then I just walked over and stood under another grain bin shooting, right in there with the trucks, firemen and grain bin owner. LOL! No one even told me I was in the way and to get lost. :-)

Explain "pinning" a canoe, if ya would Dave.

yeah, I was a bit paranoid!!! I had TWO digitals along. And no waterproof bag. I figured if my cheapass Olympus fell one, well OK, I'd have to get a new camera. hehehehe. BUT... the newspaper's NIKON was another story. Not even on an assignment. It was in a baggie (although I think it had pinholes, in its little cloth case, in a fanny pack. Water did get on my Olympus from sitting in the same bag, no case, and the canoe was getting some water in it (from all the times we had to get out -- and back in -- to walk it over rocks.)

Expect to see more shots. LOL

Nice, good looking shot. As for the grass, either include more or lose it.

I like it Brian. Humidity in the air gives interesting effects, right? :-) I'm in Iowa and certainly have that same experience. lol

Thanks, Kurt. Oh, and to ID those crops for the city folks... lol... those are soybeans in the foreground. Corn and alfalfa are contour cropped in the distance. Contouring with alfalfa helps control erosion problems with row crops (like corn and soybeans) on hillsides. AND THAT'S YOUR FARMING LESSON FOR TODAY! hehehe

Where'd ya shoot it, Sean? Hmmmm, to my eye the focus of the shot seems torn between those rock ridges and the waterfall.... which to look at? My eye doesn'f fall on one main point of importance in the shot. Whatever is in the bottom left corner is distracting. I like the look of the area and bet you have lots of nice shots from here.

Let me say upfront, I certainly know this is far from a good shot. I post it to simply honor Lance Armstrong and wish him another Tour win.

you have the space in front of the moving jet, which is where you need it. I debated cropping a lot more off the top, figuring you just lose the tops of the lights, big deal. But then thought all that sky shows the jet's destination, so why not leave it?? Hmmmm, or maybe crop the top of the left light off and just above the top of the right light, to show what they are? That might not be too bad.

Very nice shot!! You should contact KLM with this. Cropping off tips of wings doesn't bother me. I'm a journalist and like tight crops to get the reader into the photo.

Nice to meet you,"Mighty Quinn" (was looking at your webpage). I love this shot. Toooooo funny! So how the heck did you get the doggie to look at the camera when you're in the shot? Did someone else help to make the dog look and perk up?

It's not vertically straight. Look at the gazebo pole at the right. Also, you have the guy on the right leaning, which doesn't help the straightness illusion, but, then, it isn't straight to start with. Kinda cute otherwise.

Hi Matt, yeah, I know it's washed out. I liked it and specifically did that to it. Felt it gave it an "antique" look heheh... So I called it "Photoart." See the real shot, which I think qualifies as journalism (I'm a reporter and could see taking the shot for a paper) here: http://www.usefilm.com/showphoto.php?id=18467

I don't know what it is. It was an empty gallery at the Art Institute of Chicago that was having a piece installed. Maybe a perusal of their website would tell? dunno.

Hey, so are you in Utah? You should tell me cool places to shoot if so. lol... lisapbia@hotmail.com I only get there once a year, if that. I may post my super-saturated sunrise shot from Zion that just got a couple local awards for you to see. ;-P LOL

Ohhhhhhh, Debbie, I love this shot! I'd say the crop is perfect. Sets the scene. And sometimes you can get by with half full of subject, half with no subject. Here I think it works well.

OK, I attached a shot of mine below. I don't think it portrays well what I wanted, but it'll give the idea. I wanted to feature the "Jesus Saves" and show a kayaker going by in death's gripes (so the slogan would be very appropriate, like a kayaker's prayer).... as well as a bit of a long shot to set the scenery. BUT... the kayaker never got quite close enough to play it up right for one thing. I'll quote photographer Galen Rowell and say you need to envision the photo you want... and then make it happen

Hi Sarah! I know you've been asking for comments on your stuff, so let me give my opinion here. You're doing good stuff, but try expanding "outside the box" a little. If you're titling it "Canoe Slalom," how about getting canoes running the course? That would be what makes this special, I'm guessing. Or maybe you're trying to show something else that's special here that I don't get? I'm thinking back to the river shot where you mostly saw a big piece of concrete. Think what you subject really is and make sure it's your focal point. Also, just as a matter of personal taste here, I don't like all the power lines, etc. Or maybe those lines across the water have something to do with the course?
