An hour of time onto one photo... now, what other visual medium can do that? Very nice photo; I like it a lot.

David, I admire your purism nowadays... i'm almost like you, even dealing with photography just a few months. Great images do you offer to us: specially those from Reformatory. Concerning this image, let me try some suggestion: don't move the chair and, in my opinion, try to open the aperture. COncentrate the focus on chair and tree. And Merry Christimas!

Nice light. Just a few dust spots? and I would like to see some detail in the dark areas. I would imagine the print is beautiful! Very dramatic.

The window may be a little crooked but I attribute most of the distortion to wide-angle keystoning.

That was my feeling about this too. However there was not much I could do about the background except use less DOF which was another after thought I had. If I were digitally inclined I am sure there is someting I could do about that background. I think this is going to be one of those images I learned a hard lesson about bad technique from no matter what my intentions were toward it.

David, I am with you on the "record how it is school" however the brighter background from the tree is distracting. If the total background had the same distinct blacks as the top of the image - you would then be drawn to the chair.

Thanks for the comments. I would have loved to have gotten rid of that bush as well but I was standing on a rocky outcropping and was limited to where I could go and still maintain some compositional integrity. I would have loved to have a cherry picker and gotten some elevation on the scene. If any one is wondering this was shot from Java Point in Craignure on the Isle of Mull

Thanks everyone for your comments. I am wholly aware of the horizon tilt as this was a "shoot from the hip" situation. This is the proof and I figured some day when I got a better print made by a good lab I would get that problem fixed. This is the only picture that really worked because after this the swans moved off and had their heads under water feeding. I do agree that cropping from the right would be an interesting idea.

I agree with Kenneth that this is a really neat composition. The only thing I would change is getting rid of the horizon tilt -- something I see a lot in otherwise fine photos, and I that I find quite distracting (but I'll also note that this topic has come up before, and a lot of people aren't bothered by it at all).

Beautiful lighting situation here. The composition is excellent. The two swans forming a dynamic balance, taking the eyes around the frame and deep into the back of the shot. A couple of nitpicky things. I would prefer the farther swan to me a little more to the right. Or, crop a little of that side. The clouds are wonderful and can make a great shot themselves. But here, their seem a little too dominant.

Wonderful rays of light! I really like the full range of tones and the blue sky. The composition works; well-grounded and well-framed. I am not crazy about the bush in the middle though. It is not visually intresting enough to make a good silhouette and it merged with the distant shoreline. A silhouette of a person, placed at the lower right, could add a sense of scale and gradeur, and better balance the composition.

This is so excellent. I read the comments from the cell block and I looked at the link. After reading that and your health warnings I am not sure that I want to mess around with that stuff, especially since there are young kids where I live and considering my dad's law, "Murphy was an optimist" I don't think its safe. I wonder if I can get this same effect in an editing program. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. I realize that it is not the same thing but I would like to get close Honey

I have a hard time with this image... mostly, I think, because its not readily apparent what I'm looking at. Call me simple! Perhaps its simply the size of the image, but I just have a hard time 'orienting' myself to the subject (which is what?) and its context. I like the range of tones in this, but without being able to make sense of them I don't think it matters.

This one has a very interesting rythm. The emphasis for me lies on the black spot somewhat above the middle, slightly to the left. Then to the bright part almost straight beneath it. However, from there I tend to look again straight down, almost off the picture... Maybe it's because the lower part is a lot lighter than the rest. Maybe it's just me
