Justin - I have been away from usefilm.com for awhile and was surprised to receive a comment on my Aerial Bike photo. You are, of course, correct. Karl, the rider was doing a 360 off a quarter pipe when I snapped the photo. I had been photographing Karl for about two years and was very familiar with his riding. I had a new flash, a Nikon SB-80DX, that day and had set the camera to shutter priority and rear-curtain sync. I was leaning against the quarter pipe. His front wheel was literally inches from me and I took the photo at the right moment. I still do skateboard photography which I have photographed for about six years. While I still shoot film, I started to shoot digital with a Nikon D70. I had been worried about shutter lag with digital but that is not a problem with the D70. I continue to use film due to the telephoto factor of the D70 as I am a wide angle shooter. I have looked at your photos - they are very good. Thank you for your comment. Hi Scott - I have done a little of this work myself - from my experience, and the direction of the streaking in the background, the rider was actually moving through the air in a sideward fashion, either spinning or turning the bike in mid-air. looks awsome though huh? Great work I think.

Hi Joel; wow, I was only a year old when you made this photo. It's amazing you got so close to him for the picture. I'm glad you scanned it for preservation. In a historical context, it's very poignant.

I love the complex lines and shadows that this image showsthe contrast and levels are perfect... my only critique is that the 1/2 inch or so area on the left side of the shot is a little distracting, please see the crop idea included in this comment.

This is absolutely beautiful Joel!! You sense of composition is excellent! What rich tones of blue and the rocks included in the foreground make me feel like I am sitting on them watching the scene! Awesome! Well done! Cheers Alan

Good use of a strobe. Normally with the natural lighting, the figure would be in silhouette. Really nice technique.

A very tranquil image, Joel, and so restful for the eyes. Quite the opposite of the raw energy of your bike shots! Good range of grey tones here - I can imagine this as a lovely rich print.

I like the zany energy of this, Joel. The situation is so good that I wish you had gone a little further and done something to vitalise he tonal scale - there is too much white in the image for comfort. I would go to Levels in Photoshop and add more black and shades of grey. Try it and see what I mea! I can assure you my comments are offered with the best intentions, so I hope you will not be offended. Best wishes. David

Nice action capture! I think I would like it a bit better with a tighter crop, even if it's just from one side of the picture.. Too bad the tired got cut off a bit, but the overall picture is a really good. Well done!

alright, i'll bite -- how did you get this without getting hit? i love the perspective, especially the wide-angle effect of the front tire vs. the rest of the image. i've shot skateboarders before (with limited success) but not bmx...
