About Poor man's macro - a low end digital camera (3MP Canon A75) + lens
assembly taken from a broken 50mm f/2.8 film camera lens + homemade plastic adapter + homemade flash 'guide' (without it the built in flash
is useless for macro photography). I have spent a total of $150 on this setup ($150 for the camera and $0 for the homemade macro equipment)!

Even though I am a complete beginner in photography, I hope to show that you can get usable (super)macro shots using a really low-cost equipment.
Go and experiment! It's really fun! :)

Well done Domjan, you have done very well to get a macro shot this good with an a75, really well done. Love the colours and crispness. Great job.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185017} 1/14/2005
Hi Domjan, outstanding macro shot. creative solution with your gear, it seem to work very well! Excellent DOF, and the deep green and dark tones creat a very consistent and well balanced view throughout the image. Absolutely a top notch shot....

Cheers,

Hugo

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 1/14/2005
Thanks Hugo! As I am just starting in digital (and macro) photography, it really means a lot to me to see that some people like my shots :)

James Bambery   {K:13421} 1/14/2005

Beautiful.
It looks like creature from another world. Combination of its compact body with delicate legs gives strong impression. I like the way you combined different tones of green colours.

Marilyn Nagy   {K:6008} 1/15/2005
Domjan, Amazing clarity and color for such a small creature. Very well done. Thank you for your kind comment on my azalea photo. Marilyn

Bruce W. Clark   {K:1100} 1/16/2005
Excellent photo. It look as if you're looking right
in nature instead of looking at a photograph.

B:)liana    {K:30945} 1/17/2005
Bravo za ovu, tako je lepa i nestvarna! Odlican fokus i mekani DOF! Detalji su ociljivi a boje su prekrasne.
Pozdrav, Biliana

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 1/18/2005
Thanks Amy!
I have made just 2 shots before he flew away. This is the only one that turned ok.

Ben Mok   {K:4084} 1/24/2005
Well done.....I know what it is like shooting macros with one of those cameras!
You have an interesting portfolio!
Cheers,
Ben

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 1/24/2005
Thanks Alberto!
If you have a digital camera with a 'small lens' (f/2.8 or worse), you should be able to make a good super-macro addon lens.

Kareem Hamdan   {K:3180} 2/2/2005
One word: Excellent!

I can't understand what is the adapter??

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 2/3/2005
This is how you can make a simple adapter for a Canon camera:
(this is my IR filter adapter)

Kareem Hamdan   {K:3180} 2/3/2005
Thanks, you are really smart and lucky!

Regards
Kareem

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 2/3/2005
No, I am really not that smart. But, as Rutherford said:
"We haven't the money, so we've got to think." :)
It's really not that hard to build an adapter for a 50mm camera lens.

Kareem Hamdan   {K:3180} 2/3/2005
Ok, I am the same too, I used a lens infront my camera, so I could focus on 6X at the distance of 20 cm, this amazing, but I need a tripod, so see this photo I took it yesterday, it is my first drop.

Randy Lorance   {K:24769} 2/8/2005
The richness of color and clarity along with the great lighting makes this one of the best macro insect shots I have seen. Not to mention the excellent composition and DOF. Definitely a favorite-that you got these results as a beginner with patched together equipment is astonishing.

Randy

Linn Currie   {K:24426} 2/8/2005
Congratulations on not only being so talented, but also on your prestigious award. Well deserved.
Linn

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 2/8/2005
Thanks Linn! I don't know about being talented, though. Big role in macro photography is played by simple luck. :)

Mario Poje   {K:3} 2/8/2005
Excellent shoot with good colors ;)

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 2/8/2005
Thanks Mario!
I sve to sa Canon foticem ;)

criscali criscali   {K:11} 2/8/2005
beautiful...... can you send a photo of your macro equipment, when use on a a75.....

Patrick Ziegler   {K:21747} 2/8/2005
Great shot and congrats on the award. I am inspired to go out and find used damged lenses to experiment with.

However I do have to question whether that is really a Mosquito. Looks like it is some sort of long legged fly. He has no stinger.

Again, Really great photo!

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 2/8/2005
Thanks Pat! My goal is to incourage other people to experiment with low-end and homemade equipment. It's really not that hard.
I don't think all mosquitoes have a stinger. I think the males haven't.

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 2/8/2005
Thanks criscali!
I can't send you the photo because I don't have it. To take it I would have to use another camera which I don't have. Also, at the moment, I don't even have A75 as it is with my father on the buisiness trip.
Here is a photo of the macro lens ant the adapter:

Patrick Ziegler   {K:21747} 2/8/2005
This is what a South Dakota Mosquito looks like. However, I know nothing about mosquitoes other than they are are very anoying and carriers of West Nile fever.

Again, cograts on the award!

Sergio  Cárdenas   {K:24942} 2/8/2005

Bravo Domjane. Pozdrav, Amer

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21932} 2/8/2005
This is one of the most stunning macros I'Ve ever seen...and I would be very happy to be such a béginner as you :))) Great work...with a great equipment.

Hai
You are a great inspiration to all of us.
Great shot. Fantastic Colours. Congrats.

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 2/27/2005
Me? Inspiration? You must be kidding! But thanks! :)

Denis Jelec   {K:18} 3/2/2005
Super fotka Domjane! Kako si uspio ovoliku ostrinu dubinsku dobiti?

Domjan Svilkovic   {K:3104} 3/2/2005
Hvala Denis!

Silvia Hudak   {K:1171} 3/25/2005
que maravilhosa imagem, quase espiritual!

Alyazia Khaleefa   {K:1168} 3/25/2005
thanx Domjan.. that was usefull.. i'll post some of my macro shots soon!

thanx again!

Latifa Al Shamsi   {K:74} 3/26/2005
Oh WOW!!That's all I can say!!I should start experimenting soon..I'm only left with a 60mm macro lens at the moment for my FinepixS2

andree lerat   {K:17140} 3/29/2005
Reading about how you photograph this image is outstanding and quite deserving of an award. Looks like it was taken with traditional equipment. Great job. I couldn't even begin to construct my own equipment and I barely understand your description of how you did. Feel pretty dumb. Great job. Regards, Andree

Cristina D   {K:8068} 6/27/2005
Can you pls. be so kind and send me more details regarding ur home made plastic adapter+ home made flash guide and also what do u mean about: "assembly taken from a broken 50mm f/2.8 film camera lens", broken?which kind of camera was?Only if I`m not asking too much, cause I`m really impresses by ur job here!
I tried a macro with mine canon A95 but without flash and with it`s original lens from canon 3x optical 38-114mm f/2.8-4.9 zoom; I have also a question I saw someone that said he used full zoom for a macro, I tried with mine and cannot focus to well the object and it isn`t clear anymore.
Pls drop me some lines if you have the possibilty at:crisy_crisy@yahoo.com;
by the way I started to take photos in November last year with a Canon A300,so I`m a begginer too.I saw the filter adapter that u built it but I need more info cause do not know too much to build myself, one like urs.
thank you in advance!

Hello Domjan this shows it's the photographer behind the camera, not the technology! The image works well in what's really browns and greens. This simplicity makes the composition stronger. I recall eons ago where I made a close-up lens by taking apart an old wide-angle and tele auxillary lenses and switching the front and rear parts. This gave me 2:1 when mounted on front of my old Spotmatic II. I had to make a 49mm to series 6 stepdown ring in my high school machine shop. Experiment more, you are on the right track.

ro tran   {K:17} 6/28/2005
nice!

Lori Stitt   {K:74568} 7/1/2005
Good job, and congrats on this award!
I have often said that anyone can pay a bundle for the great equipment...BUT, not everyone who does this is able to 'see' the neat, appealing image. The true photographer should be able to take a fantastic image on simple equipment. Here, we see that you are a true photographer.

Nice composition, great colors! (hope this one isn't carrying 'West Nile'!!)

Lori :)

Just great! Congrats for the deserved award, This is really great efforts to achieve the professional resulat within budget.

You've truly showed the capability of one's thinking that can beat the expensive equipement's result.

Darrell Larose   {K:730} 7/5/2005
Are you sure that isn't a Canadian mosquito, that appears to be exact size on the screen ;)

Domjan,

Let me first complete the formalities by giving you a 7/7 on this. :)

You see, I have the same kind of basic camera and lens, but would die to take a shot like this. Can you please explain a bit more to me, about the homemade macro equipment, so that I can also take some pictures like this ?

I will be ever indebted to you !

with sincere thanks,
Avi

There's nothing 'poor' about this, Domjan! You might have uploaded it nearly four years ago, this it's a wonderful shot for someone who claims to be 'a complete beginner in photography'!
