About An Attempt at a high-key shot I found to be particulary peaceful. I used a grey / green hue versus true B&W.

I like, I like! Just enough light to capture a hint of detail on the water and well composed Doyle. I say your "attempt" at high-key worked out very well!
Take care...Robin

Thanks Galal. The Grey Green tone was what I was most unsure of . . . I just couldn't decide whether I should leave it white or not. So, naturally, I appreciate your comment very much!

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99049} 10/16/2006
Thanks Robin . . . my worry was the gray green tone instead of the true B&W . . . but I finally chose this. I appreciate the comment . . . I used a Gaussian blur with a 20% opacity to smooth out distractions and still allow sharpness . . . it felt funny using a blur to get a sharper image but I can assure you this newly learned skilled has a great deal of promise for me. We're all in trouble now . . . I finally started to read about how I should do things to get desired results . . . which MIGHT be quicker than my old "Trial and Error" procedures.

Now where did I put that PS book when I bought the program?? :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

I loved this peaceful image..very impressive work..liked the idea of smoothing the background...but still preserving the details of ship..

I love the way the water just fades away and blends into the sky here. Very effective and subtle use of hue.

Michele Carlsen   {K:113360} 10/17/2006
Excellent image Doyle always got something new for us to view ...with a very much appreciated discription . I do think the high-key shot is totally peaceful and tranquil....

Well done, and altho I know it's not total blk and wht. I like the tone so very close... But a bit off... It's really different Doyle, and very GOOD !!!!!! 7++

Best Wishes,
Micihele~
PS I love there is no horizon !!!!!

Thanks John! . . . that's it? Since the word "Genius" didn't come up . . . I'll assume that though the shot has some good tech points it has yet to be raised to that level. Perhaps a better subject......Oooooh . . . you have me thinking my friend! :)

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99049} 10/17/2006
Thanks ever so much Dear Michele! The lost horizon was exactly what had appealed to me in this shot . . . to me it felt like stationery when in pure B&W . . . which . . . though not a bad thing . . . wasn't what I was seeking. So I'm very grateful to hear that you and a couple of others like the gray-green hue. And of course, I'm always happy to see your name among those who comment on my images. I have noticed that the technical critiques you have been leaving on many photos are being done very well of late . . . you are one very fast learner and are now starting to really help other people! :)

I love this shot Doyle with it's beautiful tones and just a hint of the water that the boat is riding upon. A great entry into the project. It has a total air of peace and tranquility and evokes a great sense of calmness within me. I love the creative flair you have used here and the greygreen works exceedingly well. I rarely 'adopt' favourites but this shall be one of my few.
Tell me Doyle what is that UF in a box after your name but before your donors' star????
Great work my friend, I'm just home from my night shift and wandering around the site for a while. My very best wishes to you as always,,,,,Ray:)

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99049} 10/17/2006
Hi Ray! I always love to hear from you and especially when you give such glowing praise! LoL!

The UF Flag came about due to an incident involving the recently departed Rashed and another member which went into a forum -
http://www.usefilm.com/Photo_Forum/21/1012944/
and the merits of keeping versus discarding all flags were discussed. Members could not opt out . . . a flag MUST be chosen so Gayle would select flags that had no graphics . . . Phil designed a flag . . . she switched flags . . . Until he asked why she was doing that and she said she didn't want ANY flag . . . so he designed one to represent Photographers without Borders. All a bit strange but the last to comments in the link explain it well . . . and my profile lets you know whether I'm online or not . . . hehehehehee . . . I'm on when it says UF . . . and off when it's my flag!

Warmest regards to an old friend,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Annemette Rosenborg Eriksen   {K:55218} 10/17/2006
This is very good, Doyle. Peaceful maybe but also a bit spooky like the Flying Dutchman had it been another ship. I love spooky!!:-0
If I am to suggest something it would be to have a bit more oceanview/reflection in front of the boat instead of in the back.
A nice one.
Take care,
Annemette

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99049} 10/18/2006
Thanks Annemette! Appreciate the comment . . . Hmmmmmm . . . I like the Flying Dutchman idea . . . :)

Mary Slade   {K:40918} 10/19/2006
Really like the feel of this. Seeing a slight reflection on the sea, but not where it meets the sky adds an element of mystery.

Dev    {K:3338} 10/31/2006
Beautiful picture Doyle. Definitely peaceful without a doubt. I think water is one thing that never fails to bring peace to one's mind. Be it the sound of it, sailing over it and just looking at it. The high key works here and gives the feeling of a lake out of the world.

Regards

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99049} 11/1/2006
Thanks very much for the comment Dev. I agree about the innate tranquility of water . . . which calms me even when it's tempestuous or stormy! This is The Pacific Ocean . . . and not a lake but either way . . . always a calming influence! :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~
