  Q. Opinions on New York Institute of Photography or Other Schools
Asked by Mark Kirchner    (K=1595) on 8/26/2007
Does anyone have an opinion on the New York Institute of Photography as an affordable alternative to an expensive art school that would cost thousands of dollars to attend? Has anyone completed the NYIP program? Does it give you more than the basics to build on?
I know it's not like getting a 4 year degree in the arts but I thought it might be a resource to learn some of the finer points of photography.
One area where I am weak is portrait photography lighting and I'm wondering how well a program like NYIP can teach the finer points of equipment (lights and flashes), indoor lighting and exposure and bring it all together. I suppose it also comes down to asking the right questions during a class or program.
How about other on line schools or classes? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!
Mark

I just entered a photo contest NYIP is holding. I dont know a lot about them I am afraid. Currently I am a bit irritated with them because my entries have still not been uploaded to their voting pages. Still I was wondering the same thing you are. They look like they could be a good place to hone photography skills without paying an arm and a leg.

I also sent a email out to the Chicago Art Institute photog dept. to see what they offered. No word back yet on that.

Chad,
I see NYIP advertised in almost every photo mag out there but have yet to run across someone who has taken the program. NYIP instructors seem to contribute to magazines and write some good articles so I would hope they are active and up with current technology. Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your entries. I'll pass along anything I might hear about them in the future.

I am currently enrolled at NYI. I think that if you have the time to devote to it and are in need of the basics it is good. You have 3 years to complete the course at your own pace. You receive the materials and read the unit, view the DVD associated with the unit and then complete the assignment. This consists of taking assigned pictures for the unit, mailing them in and then your instructor reviews them and send back a tape with a critique of the pictures. The basic concept is great. I have had a difficult time with some of it because I don't have the resources to do some of the practise assignments. But I have learned a lot so far. I don't think I have necessarily put it into practise, but it is there for you to use. I think I just need to think about what I am taking pictures of, apply the lessons I have learned so far and go from there
