  Q. Third party accessories
Asked by Jonathan Ip    (K=75) on 6/23/2009
Hello everyone

What do you think of think party equipment like Kenko and Hoya filters. Third party battery grip etc.

Some on ebay are really cheap;)

Any thoughts are welcome

Well, re the filters. Hoya are an optics company with a long and illustrious reputation. They now own Pentax. Hoya also have a large (I think majority) stake in the lens maker Tokina and supply Tokina with all their glass. Tokina owns Kenko, and Hoya filters are made by Tokina/Kenko. C'est le vie. I use Hoya filters and have never had any problems with them. I'd probably steer clear of some name you've never heard of though.
I've no experience with 3rd part grips at all, but I have heard that none of them have weatherproofing where the OEM grip has, and they sometimes lack some of the buttons found on the originals (certainly for Pentax anyway). Doesn't mean they don't work, just that they're limited in functionality.
Regards, Gary

Hello Gary

Thanks foe useful information about filters, one thing is where do you get your filters from. I wanted to get off ebay as they are cheaper. What do you recommend me. I just got one which is basic and made in USA pretty good actually.

Hi Jonathon
I buy mine from Loobylin, a small ebay company based in the UK. I've dealt with them several times, they've always given me first class service.
Regards, Gary
