  Q. Noob Needs Help
Asked by zeke  Girard    (K=20) on 7/10/2009
Hi ALL!!!
I didnt want to go to a store and ask there because I figured here I would get the honest truth.
I need to buy a camera that can take a picture of a label on a wine bottle - being that the bottles are curved. The only thing I want is a picture of the front label and the back label. Can you recommend to me a camera that will do this (or camera and extra lens) the best way as the label cannot be removed from the bottle.
Thanks for your help!!!

You need a decent depth of field, and enough light.
That means a pretty strong flash, and a decent lens.

Any DSLR can help you there.
As you're probably going to be rather close to the subject, a macro setup may be your best bet. That means either a ring flash or a system with multiple flash units synchronised in a master/slave configuration.

Something like this would do the trick: http://www.europe-nikon.com/product/en_GB/products/broad/721/overview.html
Can't tell you what lens to use, but I guess a 60mm micro Nikkor would do the trick. http://www.europe-nikon.com/product/en_GB/products/broad/1549/overview.html
Mount on any DSLR in the Nikon range and you have a versatile system. D90 or D300 would do just fine, or save a bit and get a used D70s or D200, which are great cameras and rather underpriced used (as are all digital cameras).

You only want a camera to shoot the labels? I'll suggest you get an old film camera, say a Canon AE-1 or a Canon T 70, they go for thirty or forty bucks on ebay and will take a nicer picture than most digital cameras. If you also get a macro lens for those models, they're dirt cheap.Something like this: http://shop.ebay.ca/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38.l1313&_nkw=canon+t+70&_sacat=See-All-Categories
It even includes a macro lens. The lens alone is worth more than the current bid. My local second hand camera store would ask 120 or so for the lens and 100 for the body (but they're overpriced). What I've been trying to say is that you don't need a dslr for what you're doing. Film cameras are usually cheap these days and will meet your needs.Good Luck, Kurt
