  Q. Camera and Housing HELP
Asked by Alison Stroebel    (K=4069) on 11/30/2005
Hi All, I have been away a while but now I need Urgent help re the above.
We have been offered the Canon Powershot A610 with the Canon WP-DC10 waterproof housing. In addition to this they recommend a Strobe and suggested a reasonably priced one the Sealife SL960D Underwater Flash.
Can any of you comment give advice or experience. Our other option is the Sea & Sea DX-750G with housing.
HELP please.

All of the smaller point&shoot rangefinder type digital cameras will work fine Alison. There are a few limitations however.

Primarily, the type of camera you are looking at has "shutter lag". This is a short delay between the time you press the shutter and the time the image is captured. The delay is to give the camera time to preflash, focus and snap the image.

The delay is usually only a fraction of a second, but if you are trying to take images of moving fish, that can be very difficult to adjust for.

This is not a reason not to buy the system you are looking at, but you need to be aware of that fact.

An external flash with a long arm is a must, but before you buy, make sure that your camera allows for external flash hook up and that you will either be able to maintain your TTL capabilities or that you are comfortable using manual flash.

A really good place to learn more about underwater housing and lighting is www.wetpixel.com. A great bunch of folks that do nothing but talk about underwater gear.

Good luck and happy diving!

Bob

Thanks for your reply Bob, Do you know if one can maintain the TTL capabilities with the Canon Powershot A610?

If it does, I am almost certain that it would only do so in an Ikelite housing that allows for the blocking of the front flash and the use of a digital sensing system. like the ds125 ikelite strobe.

I would guess you will end up using a manual strobe system of some sort. I really recommend you try asking your question at the wetpixel forums as well. There you will get an audience of all divers......most of which are far more up to date on equipment than I am.

Good luck!!!
