  Q. Nikonos III
Asked by George Marks    (K=13699) on 12/26/2003
Does anyone have any pointers for me in using my new (used) Nikonos III? It has the 35mm f/3.5 lens.

A good starting place is to read Jim Churches book on UW Photography.

Use ASA 200 film, f8, 1/60 sec. with a Sea&Sea YS-60 or YS-50 strobe on an arm, set focus at 3 feet, keep 3 to 3.5 feet (apparant)from the subject and every photo will be beautifully exposed.
You MUST use a strobe underwater or you'll get nothing but monochromatic blue-green photos.
The strobe Must be on an arm aprox. 12 inches or more away from the lens or you'll get intollerable backscatter.
You MUST get in close (no farther than 5 feet away) or you'll loose color. Water filters it out fast.
Use a Sea&Sea strobe arm so you can set the flash ANGLE according to the distance to the subject.
If you change settings, reset to f8 & 3 feet after each exposure.
........GOOD LUCK........... ALANN
Grease the O-ring everytime you open a hatch.
