You've got more courage than I do. ;)
If you're only going to be using it for surfing, my recommendation is that it be able to handle a minimum depth of about 20'. The less controls you have on it, the less of a chance of leaks. The guy that builds my housings only puts one control on the housing. It turns the control wheel on top of my EOS 3. Shutter release is integrated into the pistol grip.
The lighter you can make it the better. The last thing you want is to be hauling around a tank attached to your wrist in the impact zone.

Hi John
I'm a surfer from Sydney Australia.
I have just finished my first housing for a canon eos. No horror stories, yet! First two test runs went perfectly, but we haven't had a solid swell to really punish it. Will post photos and info on construction if anyone is interested

I'd not try to save a few bucks on something that's there to protect a few thousand...
But IF I had a good workshop, a degree in mechanical engineering, and access to all the materials I'd need, I'd probably build one myself because I trust myself more when it comes to applying my skills than some nameless factory worker in a low wage far east country like Thailand or Indonesia (or a highschool dropout in the US or Europe).
