To clarify, I was using a hand held meter.

Where were you holding the meter? An incident meter should be ideal for this kind of situation.

If you were using an incident meter, you should have been right in their face with it, while aiming the dome at the camera. If there was something bright off to the side it is possible that it could have effected the meter reading if that light found its way to the dome which would cause you to be under exposed. Do you recall if this was the case? You sure that your meter setting reflected both your shutter and film speeds? It should have worked fine with no adjustments required.

Thank you for your replys. I held the meter by their face and directed the dome to where I would be standing. I think you may be right PHil. Light might have poked through the trees a bit and this may have caused the underexposure.
