  Q. GIMP + Nikon NEF
Asked by Ciprian Ilie    (K=13215) on 11/4/2006
Hello,

I have just downloaded the GIMP to see what it's capable of, but I found I cannot open native Nikon NEF files. Are there any add-ons or plug-ins which I can download to help with this?

Thanks,
Ciprian

http://vivisimo.com/search?tb=vivisimocom&query=GIMP+NEF came up with several results for RAW plugins for Gimp claiming to support NEF.
I've not tried any myself.

http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/ You can try Ufraw.

Or you can convert your raw file in the raw converter that came with your camera, raw shooter essentials, etc, into a 8 bit TIF file. Then open it inside the gimp and postprocess. ;)

I currently use The Gimp & it's RAW importer, (installed separately), in Ubuntu Linux. It works great! It's very similar to Photoshop Elements raw importer on my wifes mac.
I shoot with an old D1 in raw and import everything with ufraw into Gimp

What OS are you using?

thx,
-mn

Raw Therapee is a free RAW converter, you may give it a try. I heard it recently.

I use one called UFRAW (just make a google search) - it just works fine.
