  Q. Punching the Sky
Asked by Chad Parish    (K=6155) on 9/5/2007
I hate it when I go out on a somewhat cloudy/extremely bright day and take a picture where the sky ends up just white. While it may not be considered "true" to the purists to change this in photoshop, for my tastes I would like to know how I can "punch up" this rather drab background to my subject. I attached a picture that I think illustrates this problem.

Your best bet is to go out when the conditions are right.. you can't really replicate good lighting in Photoshop... especially if you have pure white for the sky.

look into Photoshop's Merge to HDR. It lets you combine light and dark exposures of the same subject and merge them so there is detail in the shadows as well as in the highlights.

I'd say pick a blue sky day, screw on a polarizing filter and fire away.
