           Asked by Kambiz K   Donor  (K=37420) on 4/26/2006
Just I read that Nokia has made the N series Ultimate camcorder phone!
The description is as follow:

The N93 is:
a camcorder with 30 fps
an MP3 player,
a games console,
a camera -
and a phone.
Not only is this a 3G phone,
it’s also got a digital music player,
3.2 megapixel camera with 3x zoom and Carl Zeiss lens,
50MB of internal memory,
2.4-inch screen and Wi-Fi.

What do you think about this mad mad mad DIGITAL World!!!!?

Kambiz, It's an OUTRAGE....:) Does that thing allow you to make a phone call too?

Kambiz, it must offer some utility to those who need a one toy does all. In my opinion simple one job tools are still preferred.

Hi Ron,

Interesting; I'm not much in favour of a "one tool does it all" device;
If I want to take a photo, I pick up a camera
If I want to make a video, I pick up a video camera
If I want to make a phone call, I grab my phone
If I need to write a report, I turn to my computer
If I want to listen to music, I switch on the CD player or Radio, unless I'm behind my puter, and then I'll listen to iTunes, but that's as far as function integration goes for me;

Especially with those phones, I think the combination of features inevitably results in a) reduced functionality of use, b) inferior quality compared to the "stand alone" devices. I've yet to see that simple tool that does it all - electronically. (I love my Leatherman which qualifies as simple, as tool, and as "does it all", I think, so I would make an exception for mechanical devices)

Then again, I'm also a gear head, and always feel strangely attracted to those devices. Luckily, the price tag prevents me from getting too many, eventhough I know beforehand that I won't use most of the features. (I mean, what's the added value of playing an arcade game on a cell phone? - c'mon! Or use those small buttons to browse the internet? Not me...)

I think you already see that with the tiny compact cameras that support full manual operation; the settings are well hidden, and require too much handling to be effective. I'd try it once, or twice, and then continue on auto, mainly because of the images I'd lose when forgetting to switch back. I think "easy access" is the key thing of the future - new GUI's, new control (-systems) and ergonomics / human factors an, most important, customisation and individualisation of controls and appearance will be the main theme in innovation.

Sorry, got carried away...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

My feelings exactly Hugo. One tool for one job only.

You guys are all missing the point. It has become fashionable to produce lousy images, lousy videos, play old fashioned video games on screens that you can just barely view, and listen to substandard sound. All in the name of trendy high tech fads.

The world is falling apart, quality means nothing, ethics mean nothing, skill and learning mean nothing and respect for the past and its values mean nothing etc.....All that matters is the friggen ring tone and how fast you can type with your thumbs on some CTS inducing keypad. No wonder this generation is a bunch of ticky no nothing kids that couldn't reason their way out of a paper sack.

Ah feels good to rant, now where the heck did I put my abacus, must be under my astrolab, can't live without it you know. ;=]

Catch you all later.

Phil

well said Phil. I'm ever more coming to realise that technology is being designed not to further our lifes but to reduce us all to a bunch of gibbering idiots.

I got me a new cellphone last week after the old one wore out (which took 3 years, where the one before that had lasted 5...).
Got me a Nokia N70. When I asked if it could be used as a phone and to send SMS messages the storeclerk scratched his head and had to look it up in the manual...

But if I want to use it as a web browser I can attach a fullsize keyboard, he did mention that without being asked.
