  Q. Springer to Katahdin
Asked by Chris Mathers    (K=197) on 4/14/2007
To start, the category box is not large in the options department. My question though. Have any of you hiked the AT? If you dont know, the AT or Appalachian Trail extends from Mt. Springer in Georgia to Mt. Katahdin in Maine. I want to do a vast photo study of the trail and wanted some advice on hiking with photo gear.

Hey Chris,

I know this is very late, but I hope it is informative. I have never hiked the entirety of the AT, but I have hiked many sections of it. I can say from personal experience, the less weight the better. After a few weeks of hiking (especially in the Smokies), too much weight will give you a great reason to give up.

When I hike, I generally take a small digital p/s, mostly kept in a plastic bag. The camera is light and you can carry numerous SD or CF cards with almost no weight. I would say that film or an SLR is out of the question.

Hope this is helpful.
