I never spent too much time in Osaka, but I can list a few places in Kyoto. Definitely check out Kinkakuji (ask anyone in the city "Kin-Ka-Ku-Ji ga do-ko desu (des / de-su) ka?" and they can point you to a bus or take you there via cab) Kiyomizudera (same sentence, but use "Key-Yo-Mi-Zu-De-Ra" instead of Kinkakuji. Kinkakuji is the golden pavilion which is so famous, and kiyomizudera is another famous temple situated on the hillside overlooking Kyoto. The walk back down into Kyoto from there will also take you right through Gion, the area where maiko (modern geisha in training) spend their time. The area is REALLY beautiful in the early morning and around dusk. I'm sure you've probably already gone on your trip, but I hope this can help someone else who is headed to the area. Sorry I didn't see this sooner! -Brent
