I use Indesign and photoshop for most of my gallery designs. Photoshop7 has one of the best gallery setups out there which is loacated automate commands and is called the Web photo gallery.

Sorry my bad. I meant to say GoLive instead of Indesign. Indesign is a decent pagination program.

IViewMultimedia Pro has a very customizable template system. It's the best for addding information to web galleries from the IPTC fields. Photoshop's ability to alter the images is nicer though.

Hi Aaron,
I use my own software written in PHP for generating galleries for the web. I put all my pictures in a directory and with one shot I can get an album ready on the web. Later I can add/delete individual images to/from the album. If you are interested please visit my wepage:
http://talkelab.ucsd.edu/sdeoras/albums/demo/ad/
To try out a demo visit:

If you are interested in purchasing it please let me know. My email address is: saurabh@ucsd.edu

Hi Aaron,
I use PShop 7. Pick one of the templates you like then build the gallery. Pull the index page into an editing program (Dreamweaver,Frontpage etc)and customize to your taste. You will then have to customize each individual page that PShop has created for each image.
I have done this with my site, www.seasidescenics.com

I'm with Altaf on using a backend solution like gallery. But, if you are going to use photoshop galleries you should try customizing the templates before photoshop makes the gallery. On the Mac (pc is probably similar) look in the photoshop directory->presets->webcontact sheet. There are a bunch of directories in that folder which contain the actual templates photoshop uses. You can make your own or alter an existing template which photoshop uses when creating the gallery. If you open up the template files in a text editor and know a little html, it will become obvious how to alter them. It's much easier than trying to fix each individual file.

if you are using a PC, check out BreezeBrowser which has really good HTML gallery support, and a number of users of the software who have created galleries for use with BreezeBrowser. www.breezesys.com .

Through the years, I have used a plethora of different tools to try to make my website photo section as simple as possible. What I have found, is that if you have the skill level required to set up software like Gallery it is worth the effort in the long run. It is designed to do exactly want you want it to do - and it comes with some simple editing features that you can run straight off of your website. While software solutions can do some of the things a web based one does - I find the web based solutions much more seamless.
You can see an example on my website.

I'd recommend http://www.artbeacon.com.
ArtBeacon.com actually allows you with a very simple site wizard in about 9 steps to make a completely independent eCommerce enabled artist web site with auto sizing and thumbnail creation of images. Members upload images and image info like any photo critique forum. The difference is that you don't get feedback but orders. It's a great compliment to gallery showings and other traditional sales channels. Artists take payment directly via PayPal or credit cards. One of the coolest features is the instantaneous change in look and feel you can apply to your site with the pre-made web templates. Very cool stuff. Definitely worth checking out.
My site ( http://www.artbeacon.com/jmg-galleries ) is made with their services. For creating an artist site you can't beat the price... FREE.

Hi :) I just spent a huge amount of time searching for the same thing, and the easiest free software I found was Gallery found here : http://gallery.menalto.com/index.php if youre ok with using CSS then its fairly easy to change the layout and display. it has quite a few features including setting permissions on certain albums which can be useful. It creats it's own thumbnails and other various sizes. So far I think its pretty good :)

Hi Mark, thanks a lot for this tip. I use Photoshop Elements, and was not very satisfied with the web galleries function... But I will have a second look now, the templates for the web galleries look quite similar to what you describe for Photoshop. Thanks again!

Hello All;
I just went through the process of finding a good photo gallery program myself. I've tried most of the above and they work well. The one that I decided on isn't mentioned here, so I thought I would post it, Coppermine: http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/
I know everyone has different needs/requirements, and they have a good demo to see if it meets yours.

Hi Aaron. Did you ever find a gallery program?
I can second John's nomination of Coppermine. I recently installed it on my website and so far, it's been a good choice. I used Gallery before, but I didn't care for it much. Coppermine supports multiple users and you can bridge it to work with PHPBB if you're looking for more of a community site. But it would also work well as just a personal gallery if that's what you're in the mood for.

While I don't use this software, I think it's great and as soon as I have the money for it....
http://www.imagevuex.com/
It creates albums of photos via flash with various customizable options. Light and easy to use. The costs are liscense based which means if you use it on more than 1 website you have to pay more. Still though...
