I saw this when the upgrade was first done and have been going to mention it but with you guys being so busy I dind't think it was important. Now that things have quietened down some and you have a pretty good handle on the bugs I'll ask this question.
Why are there 2 "Add Photos" links in 2 different drop down menus?
One is Under "Home" and the other is under "Photo Critique". Isn't one superfluous? Does each one have a different purpose or do they both do the same thing?
Just thought I'd ask.
Cheers - Ann :)

I notice that the average of comments per image is based on the total number of images uploaded, not deducting the ones that have later been deleted. Could this be changed to the average of the number that are actually still visible on the site? It would sure help my average!
Different Topic... this time apparently an actual bug.
The "back" arrows on my browser (Opera 8.4) has started occasionally taking me NOT to the page I was looking at before but some earlier, quite different page. This is just an initial flag. I'll be keeping an eye out for any repetitions and consistencies that might trap the bug.

When do you think you'll be able to get around to fix the ratings, so that a search for "top rated" photographs from "all Usfilm" gives a meaningful result? Do you intend to alter the weighting system again? If so, my suggestion would be that people like me, who very rarely rate and usually only to give a 6 or a 7 to something really outstanding, should not be penalized by having their 6s and 7s downgraded. My 7, I have calculated by watching what it does to the average, is effectively a 6, and can actually drag the average DOWN for an outstanding photo that has attracted mostly 7s from those whose ratings are not discounted in this way. This makes me increasingly reluctant to rate anything at all...

The photo count is now accurate. But the average of comments dropped from 9.88 per image to 8. Why would that be? Most of the ones I deleted had either zero or one comment, so I was expecting the average to rise. Perhaps you have stopped counting "own comments"? This would be fair, and many have requested it... perhaps in the hope that it would discourage all those "thank you" comments. I mostly comment under my own photos to answer questions about the photo, so I've never cared very much either way.
To answer your question, I was seeing banner ads at the top of forums. It isn't happening today. So far.
Glad to know that you are working on the ratings filter.

Reply to a comment (from a donor) also had a banner ad across the top of the page. Do you want me to keep flagging you on these? It seems to me you have enough to indicate a serious problem with your donor option "not" to see banner ads. That disturbs me more for the sake of Usefilm, which surely doesn't want to annoy donors, than the ads disturb me personally. I really, really do want Usefilm to thrive...

Roger, in the previous calculation which was in error, it was also counting attachment images and the photographer portrait in the number of images, which should not have been counted. IT is pretty simple math, it takes the number of active images and number of active critiques and displays the average rounded to 2 decimal places. I had not thought of excluding your own comments but that is a good idea. You really want to know what others do, not what you do. I will impliment this and see how it looks.
As for what you are seeing as your avreage, if you delete any images that had comments in them then your average would drop. You would have to drop one non commented image for every comment on a dropped image to keep your average from dropping. I think ;=] Sounds more like time for a big Sapporo at this end, too many numbers going through my head ;=]. Speak to you later.

Gayle, the way it is written it is 3 images in any 24 hour period, not per day such as it is. The same number of uploads just spread differently. So if you uploaded 3 images with the last one being only 12 hours ago and the other 2 being longer then 24 hours ago, you can upload 2 more right now and 1 more in 12 hours for example. Hope that is not too confusing.

Before the upgrade, Phil, there was some discussion of how to avoid the problem that some people have with a rigid 24hr limit. If you have a particular time of day when it's convenient to upload (like me at the office, where lunch time is convenient), the rigid time limit means you gradually get later and later until you have to skip a day. Someone suggested that 25hr "days" would eliminate the problem; the extra hour would allow people to upload at ABOUT the same time EVERY day. It would not, of course, result in any significant increase in the total number of uploads. Did this get incorporated? If not, now might be a good time to do so and document it for the FAQ and for the next upgrade. (You probably don't want to think about that, yet!)

Ooops. For those puzzled by my comment just now, that should be 23hr days, not 25hr days. Sorry for any confusion. Only having to wait 23hrs would enable you to take up to an hour to upload your three photos and STILL be able to start at the same time the following day. Hope that's clearer...

New one:
Why, when I am already a donor, does an ad appear suggesting that people might like to contribute on my behalf and make me a donor? I have no problems with appeals and/or suggestions to become a donor, but I do think the wording, at least, is inappropriate in this case. It's not just me--I see this on other donors' "intro" pages. This should surely appear on non-donors' intro pages.

Hi, Matej!
The VERY unlikely use of this feature seems considerably outweighed by the distraction. I can see it being valuable for those who are not already donors--some people cannot use PayPal or even credit cards from their countries, and some third-world students may well be deserving of a helping hand. But when you're already a donor? I think it could be dispensed with.
Of course anyone who wants to prolong my donorship is very welcome to do so. I won't hold my breath, though.

don't know if this is a bug or not, but I find that just about every other time I go to usefilm, I have to re-log in with the weird security word. I rarely ever had to re-log in before the upgrade. Not a big deal, but definitely an annoyance. I liked it when I could just open the page and go; I always use the same computer. I don't understand how it could be a security issue? It just happens all the time now...
But everything else is absolutely wonderful; thanks for all the hard work.

Technically not a bug, I guess, but a beloved feature still missing since the site change. When is the CSV statistics download going to come back? The suggetions forum, in which this bugpost topic exists, has a banner ad across the top and also embedded in the first post. I notice that the Google translation feature cannot handle accented characters. Since all of the languages other than English for which this service is offered use accents, this is a serious limitation in the usefulness of the feature. It has not been cured by having people click on the language pull-down. This generates the "translate" button as it should do, but not the right character set(s).

OK, Phil. http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1028660 is a snapshot that Claude Tenot just commented on in French because he knows I read the language. I was interested to see how Google handled the translation, and when I clicked on "translate" Google inserted a question mark in place of every accented character and left each such word untranslated. Hope this helps... I'd be interested to hear what the problem is once you've tracked it down.

Phil, if you ever have a spare moment (ha!) I would be interested to know what the problem with ratings is. Every day or so I try the "top ratings" filter with the same result (you probably know, but anyway) I get just eight B&W photos that do not appear to be top-rated or even close. Are you perhaps doing a thorough revamp to try to normalize the subjective ratings into some form of comparability? And perhaps even going back over historial ratings to re-score them? If so, I can understand why it would take time. I remember how long it took last time, and the difficulty there was explaining the "hows" and "whys."

Roger, it is just a complicated formula. I have to convert it to the new system, write new routines and take into account other data. I want it to be accurate so I have not run the catch up script to bring all of the ratings up to date until it goes through some more testing. That, coupled with fixing bugs here and there, plus my need to work on projects that can bring in enough income to pay the bills I can only spend so many hours per day on this. So that is why it is taking a extra time. I hope you will understand and be patient, and I do appreciate your help and input in locating the bugs.

Gayle, when it fails and leaves you on the critique-image_upload.asp page, let me know if there are any errors listed or line numbers that the error occured on. Then I can figure out what the problem is. Normally you would not stop on this page, it should post and then send you back to the image page you were on. So if it stops here there is a problem. Your comment following you around is because the very last thing it does before sending you back to the image page is to clear your comment memory. It is failing before it gets that far so the comment is still with you. You can clear it by closing down your browser and restarting it.
Thanks for the input,
Phil

Phil, given responses like this, which make perfect sense, it is easy to be patient. Under the circumstances it is a pleasure to keep a watching brief for the occasional bug, especially as I now know reports are welcome in the same spirit of helpfulness with which they are made. I hope you can continue to find time for such replies, as I am surely not the only one who really appreciates the more open communications we enjoy recently. I hope the new system takes account of the fact that many people would rather give NO rating than one below "5." In other words, only the occasional exceptional photo gets the high 6s and 7s... so it may not be appropriate in this case to normalize them to a much lower rating "score." Those who ONLY and ALWAYS give 6s and 7s, well, it is hard to work out just what those scores mean... Just a thought...

Al or Phil, left a comment on http://www.usefilm.com/image/1033678.html and it keep going to some error message so I tried again a few times (even took out a sentence). When I checked back it posted/repeated 4 times. Like Gayle I also had the original message popping up when I'd go to other Photogs Portfolios. That seems to have stopped so it might just have been the NSA screwing with me - I don't know. Can you please wipe out all my comments after the first one on image 1033678.If I keep having the problem with a comment following me around tomorrow or whenever I'll leave a new comment here. I have to get off right now to do some paper work - check back later if possible (1am LA time). Thanks, Mark

Mark, found the problem, all should be OK now. I will delete 3 of your 4 repeat posts if that is ok.

Thanks Phil, I checked it out and if you could be so kind as to take off the last one on there since it just repeats the one above (so please just leave my first one on there). Thanks a Lot. Gotta get some sleep. Mark

Gayle goto this in your browser:
Tools/ internet options/ advanced / make sure the box that says "SHOW FRIENDLY HTTP ERROR MESSAGES" is UNCHECKED
After that restart your browser and then try to trigger the error, when you see the real error please email it to suggest@usefilm.com so we can get this fixed today.

Gayle, Yes please leave that setting the way Al had asked. This way it will show the actual error so that we can trace it. The other way just said an error occurred but gave you no info as to what it was.
I think I found the bug anyway so I doubt you will see it again, but this setting is good to track down any other bugs out there.
Thanks for your assistance we really appreciate it.
Phil

Al, so if your previous mind-bursting super-advanced-statistics rating formula is going to be replaced, perhaps you could tell me what it was? ;-)

Comment rating links in the forums are not working in the way I assume they should, they're all just pointing to the thread where the comments have been posted.

Matej,
Forum Comment ratings are fixed as well Image Critique ratings. Let me know if you see any other problems.
Thanks,

Hi Phil.
There is an "Adult" icon on one of the images in my portfolio that shouldn't be there.

The filter of all Usefilm images does not seem to reflect your corrected ratings. When I submit a request for "top-rated" photos limited to B&W, I get only eight images and these are certainly not the top rated ones. Sorry to harp on about this, and it's fine if you are still working on it, but when you wrote that ratings were "fixed" I was expecting this to work, too.

Roger, that was comment and critique ratings, (excellent, average, poor and abse) not the image ratings. Still working on image ratings.

Ah, I see. I wasn't even aware of a problem with those. I never bother to grade comments myself. Is there anywhere we can see what grades, if any, were given? Or what the average is? Or is it simply reflected in Karma in some way? I don't think I have ever seen an explanation of the intention behind this feature, unless (I seem to vaguely remember) an "abuse" rating flags a moderator to check whether it should be deleted...? is that it?

Roger, the comment ratings are used as part of the formula for selecting the Featured Critique. And yes the Abuse rating is used to flag a moderator. We have added a new Poor rating. Before it was Excellent Average and Abuse, a rating can be poor without being abusive so we added the new Poor rating.
At present there is no public display of the comment ratings as it is primarilly for internal use. It does display what you had rated the comment at and you can change your mind, remove a rating or re-rate it if you wish.

Thank you, Phil. This is all stuff for the FAQ, right? People other than me will ask, and "Look here" is the best reply!
