  Q. Enlarger for long negatives
Asked by Phillip Cohen   Donor  (K=9520) on 3/19/2006
Has anyone built an alternative to the Seitz enlarger that is affordable. Their enlarger while beautiful, is a little bit out of my price range at something like $35,000.00. Does anyone make a modification kit for a standard enlarger to move the film at a synchronized rate with the paper?

I think anything involves mechanical movement would have to be very expensive in view of the precision needed to preserve image integrity. I do know a Maori (New Zealand) photographer who regularly prints from negatives 18cm long and even longer. I have half a dozen of his beautiful prints to prove it. Shall I ask him how he does it? It could be as simple as an old 8 x 10" negative enlarger, you know, the kind where you have to pin the paper to the wall... [grin]
