Hi David, incredible shot. great clarity, tones and detail. Love the way the shadow mirrors the bird's flight. Exquisite.

Simply beautiful.

Nailed it! The shadow, the highlights... Oh.. for just a spot of fill flash on his face.. oh well you can't have it all... Great shot, really!!

thanks a lot Pat, actually the original has more detail in the bird's face. I added a little more contrast and of course the face went dark. For a moment I thought about creating a quick mask to lighten up just the face, but I thought it might not look good. Maybe I'll give it a try. :)

Gayle's Eclectic Photos   {K:91043} 12/5/2005
hi, i like the low position of the gull, the shadow, clarity and that pretty boke...yeah, a little fill on the face would be nice, but still works without...only prob i have is with the vertical format as i want more room for gull to move into or from...but just my pref as i like wide format for movement....regards,gayle

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 12/5/2005
thanks a lot Gale. The original is a lot wider. Initially I thought the same thing, give the gull more space to move into and I tried that crop, but it felt unbalanced in the horizontals. I have attached the original. If you have a different crop, feel free, I'm always open to ideas!

hi,thanks for reply...i like to play with crops,so here is my version...quite different from yours,eh? i changed color balance slightly to blue, levels and gamma for face after selecting the area and as wide a format as i could get without putting gull dead center...regards,gayle

David I really like the version you have posted. The colours are awesome and he seems to be suspended in time.

I am quite sure you didn?t dodge the gulls shadows deliberately. First I voted for Gayle?s version, but then your shot grew on me. Kind of mysterious feeling, more interesting, the dodged version looks more common. BTW, not really 28 mm eh ?

Cheers

Carsten

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 12/5/2005
thanks a lot Casten, I agree after going back and forth I like the darker version better, too.

For some reason I still think the vertical crop works better, but its a matter of personal taste.

Yep the 28mm lens was a mistake. It was a 300 mm.

Wow great capture of this low flying gull, the light and water behind him really does make for a great background, but I really love the perfect capture and shadow..
