very nice photo Ina.
i like how the bench is taking a small area of the photo. the dry plants add alot to the meaning too.
keep it up.

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/7/2005
Thanks very much Jeanette :)

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/7/2005

Mark Longo   {K:12757} 12/7/2005
I love the textures and color in this image. The bench is lovely and you have shown the overgrown aspects of the surroundings very well.

One observation though, the image seems to want a central focus. The plant matter is distracts from the bench a bit, even though the bench is the strongest object in the shot, tending to rob the composition of a central focus. Since neither the bench nor the plants are centered in the view they sort of fight each other a little bit for center-of-attention. Yet, the plant matter emphasizes the overgrown/neglected feeling of the bench area, which is perhaps your intent and is a strength of the composition, I think. Perhaps more DOF would help either the plant mater or the bench befome the center-of-attention as your focus choice dictates? Of course all this is just my own subjective impression, other eyes must surely disagree!

And apart from the critique, your trademark clarity, color and lighting/exposure/texture sesibilities are in fine force here. The wide range of browns bring a chromatic harmony to the shot.

Mark

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/7/2005
Thanks Mark for the detailed observation. I don't know how I can fix this, other than re-crop. Here's a color version (4x3 ratio down from 6X4), I don't know if this sheds any light on the focus, or not, but I'll include anyway (see below):
I may not be able to answer very quickly for next few few days. Thanks for your comment :)

Nice tones and details here, too.

:-) Endre :)

Kathy Hillard   {K:25721} 12/8/2005
You know that I love benches, Ina, and this is pretty cool! Nice tones! The "bench lover" in me wants to see the whole bench :) but this is a nice perspective. Nice work!
Kathy

Kathy Hillard   {K:25721} 12/8/2005
After sending off my comment I scrolled down and read the other comments. I see that you attached the original per Mark's comment. I guess I got my wish and was able to see the whole bench after all! I really like the original shot! I think if it was cropped right behind the tall white weed it would be a really nice image on it's own!
Kathy (again)

Neal Nye   {K:15827} 12/8/2005
Thanks Ina. I like your original version the best. I like the tension created by showing only part of the bench. And I like the tall verticals for the dried plants which balance the diagonals of the bench back nicely. And I like the variety of browns, punctuated by the spots of orange. I guess I like everything about this.

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/8/2005
Thanks Neal, I'm happy you like it! "This Bench's for you!" - You must be pretty overwhelmed by now by comments - I'll be off for a couple of days, have a great week!

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/8/2005
Hi Kathy, I know you love benches, but also leaves, fog, kids, and barns! Here's another bench (attached) just for you, from my collection of two years ago - frozen in February after a storm! I'll be away for a couple of days, take care, and thanks!

Frozen Bench

Kathy Hillard   {K:25721} 12/8/2005
Now that is COOL (in more ways than one :)) Ina! Thanks for uploading it for me!
Talk to you when you get back!
Kathy

Aram Gharib   {K:4095} 12/8/2005
Beneath the cold chaos, there is a reflection of warmth that tries to reach us. Nice texture and coloring. Thank you.

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/8/2005
Thanks Aram! Regarding the warmth, many of these park benches are donated by people in the memory of a loved one (not this bench) - but many others have a plaque about that person or persons. It's actually quite moving! This one was buried in leaves and invaded by weeds, I thought it was beautiful :)

Aram Gharib   {K:4095} 12/8/2005
What a great idea for donation. It's much less "natural" than those initials and hearts carved in the wood! But it's more civic.

There is a lovely song by Georges Brassens about the lovers on public benches (I don't know where can you find a decent English translation; all I found was a Spanish translation but as I don't know Spanish, I have no idea about its quality:

Qui té ulls a cal ferrer,
Es pot pensar ben bé
Que els bancs on seu la gent
Solament són al carrer per (a)l pòtol i el panxut,
I això és una absurditat
Perquè la veritat
? A mi em sembla evident ?
És que hi són per a acollir els amors al seu debut.
Refrain
Les parelletes que als bancs públics fan calaix
De petons, de petons,
Ignorant que els miren de biaix
Els vianants honestos ;
???
I s'hi veuen, ell fumant
I ella poster brodant,
Al seu feliç recer,
Escollint possibles noms pe(r a)l seu futur nadó.
Au refrain
La família Tudurí,
Si es troba pel camí
Una visió semblant,
Llança esguards inquisidors contra el duet insà.
Tanmateix, tota la toia
? Pare, mare, noia,
Fill i Esperit Sant ?
Prou voldrien en el fons poder-los imitar? !
Au refrain
Quan el temps haurà passat,
Quan s'hagin apagat
Sols llavors veuran prou clar
)

Gabriela Tanaka   {K:17991} 12/8/2005
My goodness, you too dedicated a shot to Neal!! He'll get lost among dedications! This is very beautiful, I like it, I made it a favourite and it is my kind of shot! The colours, the texture, those dried grasses and the expecting bench. What a world of symbols!
Love from Gabriela

Yoshiyuki Tanaka   {K:13580} 12/9/2005
Very, very beautiful!

Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 12/9/2005
I like the treatment here Ina. This overgrown bench still looks somehow inviting and I love the little bits of orange in the leaves. Good job Ina.

Alicia Popp   {K:82471} 12/9/2005
Prciosa composición, bellos colores!!!. Felicitaciones!!!

Ahmed Ismail   {K:19853} 12/9/2005
Beautiful shot with nice tones. I like the composition with the bench on the side and the dry like grasses around showing a left out feeling.

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/11/2005
Thanks Aram for the Brassens lyrics - I don't know much Spanish - just a few words, enough to understand some of the UF critiques, but not enough to grasp a poem! French would be much better, I'll look it up in French :) Best regards, Ina

György Szönyi   {K:8347} 12/11/2005
Lovely, Ina. A lot of visual beauty on this pic. At first sight I thought you dedicated it to Kathy Hillard. But sure Neal also deserves it. Cheers, Gyuri

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/11/2005
Thanks for all your nice comments, Yoshiyuki :)

Aram Gharib   {K:4095} 12/16/2005
Ooops! Sorry! Here is the original version:

Les Amoureux des Bancs Publics
------------------------------
Bancs publics, bancs publics
Bancs publics, bancs publics
------------------------------

Voilà!

-- Aram
