Soldiers in front of Tian An Men in Beijing. Most tourists who visit Beijing will visit Tian An Men Square, from where I took this photo. Tian An Men is actually the gate (or one of the gates) behind the soldiers which leads into the Forbidden City.

Hi James, Spectacular photo. The two guards create a very strong feel for depth, and the tones and saturation is Top Notch. All the way. Superb choice of DOF, using such a small aperture wouldn't have crossed my mind, I think. (Thanks for showing, learned something new!)

Very serious looking fellows youve captured there James, though more for show than effect as it appears these guys are unarmed.
Nice perspective and composition, its just a shame about the stone wall behind the chap on the left.

hi james. first of all thanks for looking at the Mong Kok picture. and i fully agree with you that HK is a lot cleaner than a lot of places...but the Mong Kok area still looks dingy with the old tenements, even Yau Ma Tei still has some of that old stuff, but its improved quite a bit since about 10 years ago. Ive been to china several times (schenzen im sure you know, is a very popular shopping destination for expats in hk) and to Beijing as well. However, the beijing visit was when i was about 10 years old so i didnt take many photos, and definately not with my new digital! I do travel quite a bit though and ive been to several places around the world, but i only had my EOS 300D film SLR then! Im going to go take a look at your portfolio...

regarding mong kok, i think we should be happy it looks the way it looks. HK still has a lot of character left over from days gone by.
on the other hand, many chinese cities on the mainland have been totally deconstructed and then rebuilt again in the drive to modernization/development. many places of cultural and architectural interest that used to exist in chinese cities are no longer there. if you've ever visited the hutongs in beijing, you'll know what i mean. they're disappearing rapidly, for a variety of reasons. most of them seem to be just excuses to get rid of them, expropriate the land, and build a skyscraper or some other abomination in their place.

Ah, a photo including my good friend the deceased Chairman of his Democratic Peoples Republic of China. Do you still have to close your door when you talk about him? Nice colours out of your digital. I am still pondering the purchase of a D70s or D200. Meanwhile, still taking pictures with colour slides, which explains the lack of activity on my web page on this site.
