About City Patterns - why that title. Well, when the building was built there was many who complained about it and the professor in Easthetics during that time (60'th) said it look like cake paper (with patterns)...so i was thinking about that.
Still today this is counted as one of the most ugly in the city. I´m fascinated though :)

Whilst it probaly is an ugly building you have shown it well but then you could make an ugly duckling look like a princess.

João Tavares   {K:39126} 1/24/2006

Your picture is a great composition with pattern and shadows, and it has that retro feel Jeanette, but the architect must walk with his chin down when walking by this creation! Maybe in a couple of decades it will be admired as "historical" - it's all relative. Ina

Nigel Watts   {K:11093} 1/25/2006
Like the angle composition, rather than a plain straight shot. Looks like many car cylinder head gaskets put together. The pattern makes nice shadows. Is there snow on the top or just part of the building?
Nigel

naftali raz   {K:1734} 1/25/2006
intricate wall beautifully captured. "counted as ugly" - says who? may be they will change thier mind after looking at your image.

Kamran Bakhtiari   {K:16543} 1/25/2006

Robert Kocs   {K:89061} 1/25/2006
What a exciting pattern with perfect geometrical formations. Love the diagonal lines and well composed theme. Great idea the tilting form, great triangle blue sky. Wonderful composition, very well done dear friend! 7+++
Congratulations for the "Featured Critique", nice to see your work on the Front Page! :) I'm very proud of you!

My best wishes dear Jeanette!
Robert

Joggie van Staden   {K:41275} 1/25/2006
Very interesting Jeanette. It reminds me of the mechanics of a motor car - almost like a big gasket seal. Lovely patterns on the backwall caused by the shadows. Ugly for some but great photo material!
Joggie

Cesare Baggiani   {K:1485} 1/25/2006

complimenti davvero..

Markus Scholz   {K:22851} 1/25/2006
Interesting shot and view, Jeanette. But what is the building for?

Markus

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59974} 1/25/2006
HI Nigel! Yes it´s snow up there. I knew it was the last opportunity to capture it with snow (add more colours) and morning light add a warmer look too - so. Yes is the answer!

Jeanette

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59974} 1/25/2006
Yes - before i was thinking it was ugly but then i saw the possibility´s with it and also it´s a good mark of th modern time. Surrounded by old buildings it´s very visible too!
It´s a kind supermarket.

Jeanette

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59974} 1/25/2006
HI Markus - this building is for food, cloths, fabrics, home equipment and so on - a kind of supermarket with many floors.

Jeanette

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59974} 1/25/2006

Markus

Niclas Mäkelä   {K:4879} 1/25/2006
Like a cake paper ;) That's an intresting thought.. anyhow, a good capture & good angle. Clever of you to use that small blotch of blue sky in the corner.

Ninni Termine   {K:8961} 1/25/2006
This palace will be perhaps ugly, like you says, but to me it seems a lot moreover originates them and the game of shadows that creates sure interesting and originates them, like the cut of your photo.
ciao
Ninni

stingRay part 2 .   {K:151649} 1/25/2006
As a series of patterns it looks good, especially at the angle you shot at with those great angles to the patterns themselves. As a building though it may well be ugly but you have given us a good view. Well done Jeanette my dear....All the best sweetie...Ray

Simone Tagliaferri   {K:28180} 1/25/2006

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 1/25/2006
Hi Jeanette, and congratulations for the FP - I initially wrote a long comment, but then I cut it down. It was the exhuberance of the 60's - a 180 degree turnaround from the austerity of the Bauhaus which dominated modern architecture, and the austerity of the Second World War. It was a need to break with the past, and although the results may not be a marvel of esthetics, it has its own place in history - like abstract art, for historic reasons. The same happened with the Art Deco district in Miami, many of the buildings were considered ugly, they were run down, and got demolished until a group of people decided to fight to preserve them. Today everybody enjoys the ones who escaped the wrecker's ball. This may not be the case for everything, but it's people like you who can see beauty beyond the "ugliness."

karen clarke   {K:18847} 1/25/2006
Really love the shadows peeking out through the circles. Cool find~

Paolo Corradini   {K:53032} 1/25/2006

Congrats on the front page, Jeanette!
The sky triangle adding a perfect contrast to these architectural patterns.
They may be ugly in the city, but they are outstanding in your photo
Excellent work!
Mireille

nice angle dear Jeanette!!!! no wonder you made front page!!!!!!! congratulations!!!
Marian

Ann Nida   {K:45230} 1/25/2006
I can't understand why anyone would consider this an ugly building. I too think it's quite fascinating with the interesting shapes and shadows. I remember a similar building back in the 60's in Sydney Australia. It was a huge multi level indoor car park and even as a small child I loved going there and always asked my parents to park there if we had to go to the city. I think this has lovely interest and great textures. A great shot Jeanette. Also congratulations for the front page Featured Critique.

Cheers - Ann :)

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59974} 1/25/2006
HI Ina and thanks to YOU for homepage :))) I find this building very interesting and depending on how the light hit the surface the shadows are and create so different patterns. This day the snow still was there and i was also satisfied to capture the blue sky within the upper structure. I saw in some German famouse architects that this kind of surfaces on the walls was common down there ...so the link to Bauhaus is not long...

Thanks Ina,
jeanette

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59974} 1/25/2006
Thanks Ann! I´m glad you like it and also that you told me your memory of a similar building. Have to look at your postfolio, i have seen you name here and there ;)

Jeanette

Yahya El Hosafy   {K:8366} 1/25/2006

A very eye-catching photo with a wonderful angle! A nice art-work!
Best regard: Maxime

Roger Williams   {K:83282} 1/26/2006
Hmm. If that's one of the most ugly buildings in the city, then Tokyo would be full of unpleasant surprises for the critics. I've even thought of collecting some of the most egregious examples! But who would care to look at them or comment?!?!

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59974} 1/26/2006
ME :)

Jeanette

Roger Williams   {K:83282} 1/26/2006
Jeanette: That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me for a good while. I am encouraged to go out and take AWFUL BUILDINGS. I hope I do not embarass you when I say that one Condom maker in Tokyo has built a tower office block. And they believe that form should follow function. So you can imagine what their building looks like. (Really!!)

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59974} 1/26/2006
Ha ha ha - then you have a great subject/ OBJECT to start with!!!!! ;) ...I have to say that shooting buildings is fantastic fun, so start today!

I know you already have interest, so .... :)

jeanette

Mohamed Banna   {K:34222} 1/26/2006
may be i dont like this facad
but sometimes the architect fall in the trick of "paper design" and "reality"
so,, forgive him..
and this shows how it is important to make a jury before starting to build

perfect angle and shadows..

Derek Dixon   {K:4948} 1/27/2006
interesting building, people who say it ugly they probably haven't stop and actually look at the detail of it.
nice shot, I like the fact you put a bit of sky... great contrast

Fabiola Barrientos   {K:8166} 8/15/2006
Excelent shot Jeanette.Gratulerer fordi premie.:) :) :)

Hanggan Situmorang   {K:37824} 8/16/2006
Splendid angle and composition, Jeanette. How I love to see this picture showing up in the front page. Congratulations for being featured, my friend.

Bradley Prue   {K:30312} 9/16/2006
Jeanette, It's very easy to dismiss a piece of art OR architecture quickly, because it doesn't immediately make a statement. I have learned to reserve judgement on those items, as I usually find myself intrigued by that which puzzles me. You have captured in a very frank way, exactly that... a style which says both "nothing new here" and "look a little closer". The style is solid and will withstand time. Your personal style so clearly bears out this theory.. Here are the lines. Here are the angles. Here are the shadows. Your vision begs to judge the strength, not the whimsical. You clearly rock..
..Brad

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59974} 9/16/2006
Thanks Brad. This shot is far from being my best architecture abstract and me my self are not so satisfied with the result. (I know you said nothing about that) But i´m fascinated by this building and have returned many times to remake abstracts of it and the reason of my fascination is many.....when i moved to Uppsala i find this as the ugliest builiding in town. but the last years i have changed my mind. I have red what they said in new when it was build, and the (former) professor in aesthetics(philosophy about art...) said the exterior reminded about cake paper. Well, does it? Thats was rather my question when i took this shot. :))
