About This was shot underexposed in RAW to pick up the highlights in the background. I then brought up the exposure in PS to bring out the foreground. The focus is intentionally soft.

Bill Voizin   {K:10440} 1/29/2006
Beautifully soft colors with nice clarity of detail only on the inner petals. Especially like the muted background and blurred stems. It make the viewer focus on what is unique about the flower. Regards--Bill Voizin

Hi Larissa,

I like it very much! As a matter of fact, I also created a version with a white background. When I viewed both photos on my computer monitor, they were equally good. However, when I printed both photos, the one with the backlighting and shadows was a little more interesting. So I decided to post that one.

Thank you very much for your input and for posting your re-worked version of the photo!

Best regards,
Laura

Hi Laura, tks for your comments.

About my light painting: I was in a dark room, (my bedroom), i ajusted the camera to long exposition 15 sec, aperture 8.0 (because this is the limit of my poor camera :) ), ajust the composition. Turn off the light and with the flash light 2secs (more or less) iluminated some parts where you prefer and turn off the flash light. After this in PS i just did little basics ajusts.

sorry my english ok. :) Best regards, Antonio.

PS: Your photos are great !!!

Larissa Nazarova   {K:12114} 1/31/2006
Thank you, Laura.

deniz cesmeci   {K:5528} 2/1/2006
oh i like it
it s a lovely relaxed macro its simpel but it doesnt mean its bad this photo is a image that you can hang on the wall of the badroom .
i like the soft colours on this photo .
i dont know realy but it could be better if you the yellow peace of the flower better focused .
i think on this yellow peace is a lot of amazing points.
but it s not a problem its art and its your art on this time . congrs.
best regards
thank you for your nice comments
now i want give a answer to your question .
the moon is original i couldnt do somthink on this time i didnt have a pfotoshop on tis time

Hi Deniz,

Thank you very much for you comment. I plan to shoot Calla Lilies again, and when I do, I am going to try using a sharper focus.

Regards,

Laura

Nicely done. Very effective.

I also Larissa did a decent job with her framing (not something I do myself, but it can really set off a good photograph).

Susie  Peek-Swint   {K:5035} 3/17/2006
Very beautiful colour and composition Laura ~ would make a fantastic framed print ~ well done! susie

Luan Rexha   {K:622} 3/25/2006
Very soft, like poetry
perfect, regards Luan

Dmitriy Margolin   {K:2210} 5/9/2006
Great composition!Very soft and pleasant colors!
I would work it a little bit in photoshop to remove vase edge at the bottom, shadows in the backgroud and maybe add a bit of saturation.
Anyway - VERY WELL DONE!
Thank you for your comments on my work !

Laura E.  Russo   {K:5412} 5/10/2006
Hi Dmitriy,

Thank you for your comments! I will definitely crop out the bottom of the vase, and bring the saturation up a bit. However, I think the background would lack interest without the shadows. On my next attempt, what do you think of an attempt to add shadows which create an organized pattern, i.e., diagonal parallel lines or something similar?

Laura

Dmitriy Margolin   {K:2210} 5/10/2006
Actually you do not nee to crop. I think it properly sized. I would use clone tool or healing brush to remove visible part of vase.
As to shadow and patterns - I think it might add something to the image. But try to make more organized - as you said parallel diagonal lines or something similar.
Are you good with photoshop?
Best regards !

Dmitriy

Laura E.  Russo   {K:5412} 5/10/2006
Hi Dmitiry,

Thanks again for your very helpful suggestions.

I guess I'm not bad with Photoshop. I used a combination of the healing brush and clone tool to remove the rim of the vase. In addition, I bumped up the saturation by +8.

Here is the updated version of the photo. I hope you like it!
