Great sense of detail you've got! Very strong composition i think, and in this characteristic 'portrait' the story's been told by the mans hands, wonderfull. Maybe even a smaller DOF on the hands even made this shot even more captive, but anyway you'v got me!

Though he is old, the shape of the way his hands drop down from each side of the cane - it looks like a youthful date palm!

Beautiful detail and composition. Like so many others have commented - the picture tells so much. I think Gayle commented about the white splotch in the upper right corner - to me it's not just the white splotch that's distracting but rather the whole corner (white and beige). It looks as if something might be in motion, that maybe something got into the image. It simply doesn't fit with the rest of the compsoition.
