It is nice to see "real life" so far away from my everyday existance. There is so much character and culture in this one shot. I can almost imagine walking down this street, well done my friend.

I like the perspective looking down the street, Steve! It's as if we're with that pedestrian, just ahead of us! I like the colours in the buildings on either side, too. Thanks for bringing us a slice of....!
Dave.

This is a terrific photograph with great color and detail. There are so many things that bring this shot into focus.Even the way the man is walking just adds to the overall image.I would just crop a little off the top, but yours works just as well. Its just my taste.

I'm really happy you like it, Chris. You have expressed exactly how I felt being there. It's a world far different from my own as well.
Best,
Steve

So glad you like it, Dave. You've expressed just how I hoped someone would feel about it. And, you're welcome.
Best,
Steve

Gene, I'm so glad you like the photo. And I'm glad you took the time to comment on the cropping. I'd like to tell you why I didn't crop it further. There are a couple of reasons. One is that a tighter crop would change the symmetry of the sky and the path, and while I don't think that symmetry is the end all and be all of everything, I kind of like it here. A tighter crop straightens the roof line of the building in the near mid-distance on the left, and the buildings in China so often have a curvature to the roof lines that is very different from ours, and quite pleasing. Finally, reducing the sky reduces somewhat the "village" feel. Xing Ping is small and in the country.
Having said that, you got me thinking (something tough to do :>) ) about whether there was a tighter crop that I would like, and I actually came up with one that I like. I've included it below. What do you think of this one?
Best,
Steve

This is China allright. Great capture. I have doubts but I think I prefer your cropped image. It makes you even more part of the street and the colours seem even more vivid. But still, both are great.

Thanks, Karina. I'm glad you like it. I think the two crops achieve two different goals. I agree that the tighter one puts you more in the scene. I'm glad Gene brought it up. I think it's always useful to look at your own work from different angles.

when taking photos of street life in china, especially in older villages like this, it can be hard to know when an dwhen not to crop. places like this always have all kinds of things all over the place (including hydro wires), and taking anything means you risk losing an important element of the photo: the chaotic look of any old chinese village. i like this on ejust the way it is.

best wishes. james

Steve Aronoff   {K:21276} 2/8/2006
Thanks so much for your comment, James. I like it this way, too.
Best wishes to you, as well,
Steve
