Hi jeroen,
nicely composed with great dof - well done for getting the shot without spooking the bird.
The image looks a little soft and lacks contrast - though I am sure this is the fault of the scan rather othan the photograph.
It's a shame its face is in shadow though.

It's a tad soft because 1) my lens isn't the best wide open and 2) I used it of necessity handheld ballancing it on the door of my car.
Light isn't the best, but you take what you can (light was from the right and slightly backlit).

Great DOF used here. Even with that super sized lens I've found birds are so hard to capture as they move so fast. I think considering the light and how timid this type of bird normally is you've done a top job of getting this one. Some birds will sit there and almost pose for you while you take their photo. This isn't one of those. A very timid bird who flies away at first sense of danger and won't let anything get too close. Birds are not my forte so from where I'm sitting I think you've done well.
Thanks for dropping by my waterfall image. That image was intentionally tight. I have many of that same waterfall as it's my favourite. I've captured it in all sorts of variations.

Nice bokeh, a bit soft and a little dark in the shadows like Steve said. Still, you did a good jobo considering it was handheld, and in catching him in a natural pose.
He may be a common buzzard, but his profile has a regal air to it.

Hi Jeroen, first let me congratulate you for the front page feature! I'm happy to see my friend Ann Nida's critique as well. It's a great capture, and you had less than ideal lighting conditions, but wildlife doesn't always "pose" for us, so you get it when and where you can. I read through your comments, and I'm surprised that nobody took a photoshop attempt at your image. Your lens did a great job, in fact all the details of the feathers are preserved in there, you can always selectively lighten up the underexposed areas (overexposure loses the details, but underexposure is fine). Here's my attempt - I lassoed the underexposed areas and used curves and contrast, and added a semi-transparent frame to cut some of the foreground blur - I hope you don't mind - see attached picture. Iam very glad to see your image again today on this first page and I do understand that you are not of a great fun with photoshop and aim always for natural photography ,this is a very great aim and very great practise in to the real world of this media , you deserve all of the best for your continous assistant to all of the members who they come and ask for help on UF, you are very gentle ,quite and human ,all of the best my friend .
