About For centuries clowns and jesters have been used in art. Nothing new here :)

This is a tiny porcelain doll - a "Pierrot" - a classic melancholic figure of pantomime. Traditionally Pierrots have a bald head and a white face covered with flour, and usually a teardrop painted on one cheek. The origins of Pierrot date back to the 1500's in Commedia dell'arte, a street improvised theatre.

The reflection is in a silver plated tray.
ISO 400; 1/50; f14.0
No flash, daylight, overcast.
Converted to B & W, post-processed in PS.

Hi Ina - this is spooky! I like the patterns in the mirror :)

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/9/2006
THanks very much Paolo! It's been done before :) Not to worry, the doll is OK :) Best regards, Ina

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/9/2006
Hi Peta, thanks! It's actually a silver plated tray :)

Rina     {K:26519} 2/9/2006
Agree with Paolo and Peta, spoooooky... absolutely love it. Keep imagining the face in the reflection distorting into an evil grin... mmuuaahahahah! Well done Ina. Great job on the vignette too, really makes you pay attention to the doll and reflection.

Hey, what happened to your other post today? Came back to comment and it was gone!

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/9/2006
Thanks Rina, I took some still lifes today on the balcony - very poor lighting (ISO 400 could barely cope) and posted two, but I pulled the first one, I want to work on it a bit more, and maybe post one more of the doll - and I don't like alternating. Thanks very much for looking at both :) Don't feel like working on the buses yet. I seem to like only the latest, always what's newer :) Best regards, Ina

Kathy Hillard   {K:25721} 2/10/2006
Nice b&w conversion, Ina! Is this an antique doll and mirror?
In answer to your question from last night...Count me in!!! Sounds like a blast! :)
Kathy

Eb Mueller   {K:22505} 2/10/2006
Ina, fantastic composition. I like the reflection effect which takes a half face profile to full face and the very evocative moody tone.

Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 2/10/2006
I like this Ina. It's very unusual and very eye catching from the thumbnail. It makes one want to open the image and look closer at it. I like the slight angle and that cool reflection, even how her hand is resting in front is a nice touch. Really good b/w conversion too. Good job Ina.
Susie

Rashed Abdulla   {K:153041} 2/10/2006
a piece of fine art , very lovely b/w image ,creative and so plesent to view , all of the best my friend ...

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thanks very much Kathy, the dollis from a flea market, very small - the head is about 1" - and the whole doll is 6-7" and the "mirror" is a silver plated tray. I've been doing some still lifes out on the balcony today, and this is one of them :) Hugs, Ina
PS - Better go over to Rina's page (the one with the beach) and let her know you're in :))LOL

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thanks again Eb :) Best regards, Ina

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thanks very much Susie! I've had this doll for many years, I used it before, it has a porcelain face and hands and a black silk outfit. I've been doing some still lifes with silverware: trays, milk & sugar bowl, etc. Hugs, Ina

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thank you very much Rashed :) Best regards, Ina

Dave Stacey   {K:114933} 2/10/2006
Excellent still life, Ina! Mirror shots aren't always easy, but you pulled it off! Nice toning, too.
Dave.

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thanks very much Dave, I used a silver plated tray - did a number of still lifes out in the balcony :) Best regards, Ina

Aram Gharib   {K:4095} 2/10/2006
Hi Dear Ina,

I hadn't visited UF for a while and was happily surprised to see all your new posts. I'll need to go through them later on.

We're all like inert puppets who have to be content with some existing shining plate as mirror. The image we have from the surrounding reality is whatever could be reflected by such rugged surface... We are right to be upset!!

Beautiful shot, Barvo!

Best regards,

-- Aram

Yoshiyuki Tanaka   {K:13580} 2/10/2006
This shot invites so many interpretations because it is so creatively put together! But then....Ina, you are an ARTIST!One cannot expect less from you! THIS one went into my favs!

NN     {K:26787} 2/10/2006
Hi Ina! Again, very creative stuff and an unusual combination of objects! A beautiful doll, but yet it looks so sad, and doesn´t want to look in the "mirror". To me this represents a lonely and sad soul in a beautiful/luxurious environment, longing for ...? *hugs*

Gabriela Tanaka   {K:17991} 2/10/2006
Dear Ina, this is not just a photo of.....This is your CREATION! As such, we appreciate here the creative power of the Artist! And I like it very much! I am always surprised at how you LOOK at things and how an image is brought to life by your talent! My sincere compliments!
Gabriela

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thank you very much for the appreciative comments Gabriela! Pierrots are a common theme in art, from Velazquez's buffoon to Picasso - this is a recurring image :) Hugs, Ina

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Hi Elisa, this a Pierrot (a classical French character for pantomime) - usually they have a sad face with a tear, I love your interpretation! Very much like what I had in mind! Looking for more hugs :))) Ina

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thanks very much Winfried for your comment on my Pierrot :) Best regards, Ina

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thank you Yoshiyuki, I'm honored to be among your favorites :) Best regards, Ina

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Hello Aram, nice to see that you're back! I have posted A LOT since you left, and I thank you for your kind visits!
As you know, Pierrots, harlequins and buffoons are a common theme in art :) Pierrot is the "sad" variety from the French pantomime, it has a permanent teardrop painted on his face :) I love your interpretation, as usual! Best regards, and thanks - I will post one more for now :) Ina

Melisa Meyers   {K:9532} 2/10/2006
What spooky little dolls these are - Where are its fingers?! I love the textured reflection that distorts the face. It really creates an imaginative state since you don't get a clear shot of spooky dolls face in either perspective. I love the darkened color tones it really adds to the drama of this.

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Hi Melisa! The doll is a "pierrot" a sad clown type. It's very small, the hands and face are porcelain, therefore not much detail, the hands are about 1/4" - very small. Thanks for your comment, best regards :) Ina

Fantastic! This shot comunicates a complex mood wonderfully and effectively! Use of B&W is key to the mood and helps the overall mood of the shot become more abstract (I mean absrtact in the emotional sense, not the visual).

The detail and line patterns in the mirror are lovely and create a sort of interaction between the doll and the doll's reflection. It's hard to describe exactly what I mean by that, but it is a another important element of the shot, I think.

Lastly, I think the low angle with respect to the doll is the genius of this shot. The shooting angle brings a portrait-like quality to the shot, as though the viewer were sitting down, watching a figure standing at a mantle staring wistfully into a mirror. A very human shot.

Definitely one of your best Ina, there is so MUCH in this! Sure wish I shot it! :-) Congrats!!!

Mark

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thanks Mark again for your great comment! As a matter of fact, I owe this one to you as well, because as I said, when I saw your silverware still lifes it reminded me of work I've done in the past (drawings) of the same nature (Pierrot doll, reflective tray, odd metallic and glass objects), and I got very excited and immediately saw the possibility of doing this with photography. I would have probably forgotten all about it otherwise :) So thanks again! Best regards, Ina

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 2/11/2006

Ina, its great creative impresion. I like the pale pierrot's face reflected in an engraved silver plate - interesting effect. Great natural diffused lighting adding up to strenghten the melancholic feel of the picture. Excelent one. Cheers, n.j
