About For centuries clowns and jesters have been used in art. Nothing new here :)

This is a tiny porcelain doll - a "Pierrot" - a classic melancholic figure of pantomime. Traditionally Pierrots have a bald head and a white face covered with flour, and usually a teardrop painted on one cheek. The origins of Pierrot date back to the 1500's in Commedia dell'arte, a street improvised theatre.

I placed him on a silver tray, which at this scale seemed to me like a Venetian gondola, hence the title "Silver Boat." It doesn't float, actually it sits on my concrete balcony floor and the light spots are real snow flakes.

ISO 400; 1/250; f5.6
No flash, daylight, overcast.
Converted to B & W, post-processed in PS.

Nice B&W composition Ina but what is the story of the Boat ? , Best regards .

Galal

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thank you Galal, there is no story. I've used a long silver tray, which looks to me like a Venetian gondola (at that scale) - Best regards, Ina

I love the darkened color tones it really add to the drama of this B&W composition!! Have a great week end Ina. All my best regards to you. Riny.

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thanks very much Riny! You have a great weekend too, Hugs, Ina

Paolo Corradini   {K:51788} 2/10/2006
i prefer the first image this is so melancholic
:(
anyway i like your work with BW

Paolo :)
have a nice week end!

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thanks Paolo, I tried a number of "poses" - I have many more with this doll, it looked to me like he's in a gondola :)

Karina Brys   {K:16541} 2/10/2006
My favourite of the two. The unsharp carpet is nice here. Both are very well converted to black and white.

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/10/2006
Thanks Karina! I was wondering if I should have added a toy camera PS filter - to blur and distort the edges, but I didn't want to go spooky. Actually the background is my balcony brown concrete floor with fresh snow flakes, but post-processed they look like a carpet :) Best regards, Ina

Hi Ina,
I can't make up my mind which one of the doll images I like the best. They are both very good! I think this one may grow on me more over time.
There is something just a little disturbing about both of them. (in a good way) :)
It is interesting that a few of us have seemed to gone over to the "dark side" at the same time :)
Andre

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/11/2006
Thank you for both comments on my dolls, Andre! The fact that we both stepped into the "dark side" has to do with the weather, maybe? LOL - I tried to keep it "melancholic" - it could get a lot darker than this, but then I would have to suffer through the comments. In any case, it's funny how we read dark & spooky in relation to an image, being even an inanimate object :)

Kambiz K   {K:37420} 2/11/2006
A very interesting image with lovely tones

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/11/2006
Thank you very much Kambiz! You know what this doll is doing? Trying to guess what that funny object is on your page :) Because I can't figure it out! Best regards, Ina

Another great composition with dramatic feeling, lovely still.
Fantastic details, great well laced platter, adorable ornaments.
Thanks for this sharing, my dear Ina! Hugs!
Well done!

Have a nice day!

Hi Ina! This time the doll (he/she) admires the sky, allowing the boat to drift to un unknown destination :) Great image/imagination! *hugs*

NN     {K:26787} 2/11/2006
Sorry, Ina; "un" -> an :)

Mohamed Banna   {K:34222} 2/11/2006
the angle you choose give me a great vison which i can saw the background as a canal and this silver boat floating in it ( great with this perfect DOF)
and the porcelain doll looks like it just lie and accept all what happened

well done

Growing up, I had a porcelain Peirrot mask that hung on a wall in my bedroom. The idea of a sad clown was bewildering to me as a young girl, but as I grew up, I gradually came to understand the concept.

Sure, clowns and jesters have been used in art before, but not always tastefully or with respect. I think you underestimate the power of your creativity here. I've not seen THIS done before and I like it. The deep blacks lend such an elegance to the image as it seems to cradle the buttons, arm and head. Not to mention the added smoothness to the contrast on the silver tray.

I'm probably not explaining myself well and it's quite possible someone else will read this and think "What th...?!", but hey, it's 1.30am in Auckland and it's the best you poor buggers are gonna get!!

Cheers Ina. I'm off to bed now, I've waffled on too long. Will catch up again soon! :)

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/12/2006
Thank you very much for your great comment, Mohamed! That's exactly what I saw :) I have an entire series with this doll, it's not something new, many people do these type of shots, I just happened to be interested in some still lifes right now, being that it's winter outside, and not much going on. Best regards, Ina

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/12/2006
That is exactly how I saw it, great comment, Elisa :) Hugs from me and Pierrot :0)

Kelly Duntley   {K:13055} 2/12/2006
What a dark mystic looking picture. I love the eerie darker black tones. It feels kinda creepy that I like this picture so much. It looks like a shot in a horror film. Very cool effect and composition.
Kelly

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/13/2006
Thanks Kelly, I guess the B & W gives that "creepy" appearance, "no dolls have been harmed during the shooting of this series" :) Best regards, Ina

Melisa Meyers   {K:9541} 2/13/2006
I am beginning to think I have Coulrophobia [fear of clowns] =) Something about this doll is so errie to me. This is becomming quite the series for you. You again have chosen an interesting subject and placed it in a thought provoking piece. The use of your dark shawdows really adds drama as well.

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/14/2006
Thanks Melisa for your visit and comment :) You're not the only one who finds the doll creepy :) It's a small doll, I guess it's the set-up, if I were to put it amongst flowers, in bright light it wouldn't seem that way! But this is more fun,,, Best regards, and see you soon, Ina

Mark Sherman   {K:15484} 3/1/2006
The first thing I thought of when I saw this was "Rosebud". It has that feel.

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 3/2/2006
Ha-ha! Mark, I know what you mean by "Rosebud" :)
Thanks for stopping by and looking at my pictures,
Best regards, Ina
