Hi Mark, I wanted for the longest time to comment on this image. I love it! what a soulful portrait, full of emotion, and what a dramatic lighting! One can feel the love for the instrument by the way he's holding it, and the closed eyes speak volumes about passion and artistic feelings, concentration and exhaustion, a whole gamut of feelings. Everything is dramatized by the low angle from which you shot him, and dramatic shadows created by the spotlight. Extraordinary clarity and detail, and a beautiful balance of light and dark. Thank you very much for this insightful and affirming comment Ina! All of what you wrote regarding the emotion, passion, and artistic feelings of the person in this portrait are right on! He is one of the most passionate and artistic musicians I have known, (and I have known many). Also your comment about the sense of concentration and exhaustion are both hallmarks of this artist. And he does indeed love the instrument, as you surmise. Ina, I am very pleased that you saw all these things because it is what I see when I look at the shot, but also, I know the person and so can't be sure if the portrait conveys this or if I'm just projecting what I know of the person onto the image.
Also, portraiture is something I have done very very little of (I'm terrified of it, to be honest!) And I've posted none of the little bit I have done, save this one image. Since I've had very little traffic/response on this image I wondered if I had really captured anything with this image or not. Portraits are a very long way outside my comfort zone as a photographer and when I got no response I'd wondered. So the fact that you saw what I saw is very encouraging. I would love to do more of this sort of work, but have been waiting for... I'm not sure what! Maybe more technical ability as a photographer. So perhaps I'm a bit closer to this form of the art than I'd thought. I can hope!

What a fine portrait. The lighting and composition are spot on. The physical and compositional tensions in the shot are marvelous--especially the contrast between the repose of the face and head seen with the strength of the grip of the hand on the instrument. The DC260 was my first digital camera, too. Even though it is primitive by today's standards, I marvel at some of the images it produced. Thanks for reminding me.

Thanks very much George, your comment is both observant and insightful and I very much appreciate it.
And yes, for it's day the DC260 was a nice camera. It was the first affordable digital camera I had seen whose images did not look like a freeze frame of videotape. A clunker by today's standards, yet it took some fine images and was an insprational introduction to DP for me.

I have been meaning to comment on this photo...I love it.
What a wonderful job you have done to capture the passion in this guitarist's heart and soul.. I sense not only a passion for his music but a passion for life. There is so much emotion in this photo...fantastic job Mark
