About In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don’t know when that road turned onto the road I’m on
Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I’m running behind

Jackson Browne, "Running on Empty"

My youngest son Derek, just turned 21.
A casual portrait in natural light.
The image is about a third of the file.
I liked the soft effect created by adding even a little more noise intentionally. I think it reproduced a similar effect to a blown up image on grainy film.
Slightly toned as well.

Great composition in this one Andre, and I like the grainy effect, maybe not as real as the grains of your other film shots, but still works I think :)

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/14/2006
Hi Fadel,
I agree Fadel. The simulated grain by using a percentage of noise seems to come out almost too even. Where the grain from film and paper is kind of random.
I've always liked that effect you get from blowing up a grainy image in the darkroom. Then when you develop it on the dark side, the image tends to look a little like a charcoal sketch.

Happy Birthday to Derek :) Looking good and I love that he is not glaring into the camera. Really a great portrait with a lot of emotion in his 'pose'. The grain works well with this, Andre, congrats!

Kambiz K   {K:37420} 2/14/2006
not a bad one.

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/14/2006
Thanks Janet,
I think the direction of the eyes is key to this one as well... for that moody look.
Andre

Thanks Kambiz,
And thanks for visiting my portfolio.

Dave Stacey   {K:123121} 2/14/2006
I like the grain and tone here, Andre! I think it really suits the mood of the shot and his pose. Well done portrait!
Dave.

Fadel J   {K:13685} 2/14/2006
Hey Andre, so how about making your own digital noise pattern from your film images? :)

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/14/2006
Thanks Dave,
I thought the grainy look had a kind of nostalgic look to it. Sort of like one of those shots you would see on the back or inside of a 60's or 70's album cover.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/14/2006
Hi Fadel,
I never really thought about that. I suppose one way to do it would be to create a file from a large blank area of a grainy shot. Then I could overlap the file into another image. It would be interesting to do. I could experiment with different opacity for the "grain" over-lap.
I think that could work. Maybe I'll try that next :)
Do you know of an easier way?
Andre

Fadel J   {K:13685} 2/14/2006
Hi Andre, the way I know which is same for texturing is to put your BW noise image in its own layer with blending mode set to overlay, and try to bring the overall tone of this layer to mid-grey (using levels or something), this will blend the noise into the image. The closer the noise image is to mid-grey, the less impact it will make on your image.

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/14/2006
Fadel,
That sounds about like what I figured. I'll give it a shot on something in the next couple of days. When I did that image of the statue and the woods, I found it really helped when I adjusted them side by side to match them up before over-laying them. I suppose the same thing can be done with a grain/noise layer. And you can always play with the opacity.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Andre

fantastic portrait, Denis! i love the elegant pose of his face lost, maybe, in his thoughts :-)
regards,
Marco

Mervo     {K:8463} 2/14/2006
Excellent, love the pose, love the grain and I love the crop. This is a very strong yet relaxed portrait, I really think it's very good, and well toned Andre. All the best!

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/14/2006
Thanks Marco,
That is what I was thinking too.
Lost in thought.
This image was snapped in between poses, as a lot of natural relaxed shots are :) As it turns out those shots are usually the best ones.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/14/2006
Thanks Mervo,
As I explained to Marco, the relaxed mood comes from the fact that this was taken in-between the so called real poses :)

Hi Andre,

nice work on this portrait, perfectly presented in the square. I like the grainy outcome. good one!

Wish you a very long life and very plesent one my friend .Very great portrait of your son Derek, Iam 3 years old than him and I pray to god that you see him always in a very good form ,the grain adds extra beauty here my friend ,I have seen my father pushing his films ,time and temperatures of his first developer to gain grain ,one of the film creative methods .I liked this image alot my friend ,happy time and all of the best from Qatar .

Andrzej Pradzynski   {K:21612} 2/14/2006
Andre, great portrait very well composed abnd cropped. Cool pose and face mimic - contemplating likely about the road to his own. Great motto to this remarkable family event. Cheers for you and the your youngest. BTW Valentine's is good day to be born.

Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 2/15/2006
Hi Andre,
Happy Birthday to Derek! I thought this was probably a pic of you at 21. Great job in creating a vintage look and mood. Well done. The cropping and diagonal head tilt are nice.
Susie

This is a great casual but moody pose by your son Andre...Always nice to see a good portrait without eye contact but the pose has to be right. Well done to you my friend..a great example. Best wishes as always....Ray

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/16/2006
Thanks Thilo,
Next time I do one with intentional grain, I'll try a different method and compare the results. I like the look of this one though.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/16/2006
Thank You Rashed, for your nice comments on this image. And for the good wishes!

I do remember doing the same thing with Kodak Tri-x film and prints. Sometimes you ended up with a large amount of grain when your shots were under exposed and you kept the paper in the developer for a longer time to try and get some more detail out of the image. I believe some people also prolonged the developing of the film to gain grain.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/16/2006
Thanks Andrzej,
I thought that his pose made him look like he was reflecting some thoughtfulness. So, I decided to add those lyrics because of the reference to 21 years old. His actual birthday was on the 11th, but close enough. :)
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/16/2006
Thanks Susie,
Nope, not me in this one.
Don't I wish that I was 21 again :)
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/16/2006
Thanks a lot Ray,
I think I mentioned before to someone. It seems quite often some of our favourite shots come from inbetween the formal poses, while the subject is not expecting the camera to go off. :)
That was the case with this one.
Andre

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/17/2006
Hi Andre, and happy belated birthday to your son Derek! Great age - and he is a handsome young man, not just a good photograph. I like how you caught him thinking, almost to point of smiling. Great toning and the noise is well done, I like the effect! I also like that it looks like an instant shot, not planned, but still with great lighting! Very enjoyable excellent portrait, I hope he likes it too :) Best regards, Ina

Darlene Boucher   {K:15673} 2/17/2006
Beautiful portrait Andre, love the almost shy look....he's a very handsome young man. Wonderfully captured my friend! Darlene

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/17/2006
Thanks Ina,
The secret is that he is watching his girlfriend light candles on his B-Day cake. (hence the half smile and the downward tilt of the head) Knowing the full details can sometimes take the effect out of an image, so maybe I shouldn't have given that away. :)
This was inbetween the standard cake cutting and candle blowing snaps.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/17/2006
Thanks Darlene,
I will have to keep a lot of these comments away from him so that his head doesn't get any bigger!
Andre

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/17/2006
Ha-ha, Andre, that explains the look! I think it's safe to give it away after you've had a number of comments :) But it's more interesting for you to see what people construct from an image without having the background knowledge :)
Best regards, and great portrait! Ina

Andre Denis   {K:56625} 2/18/2006
Hi Ina,
I agree. I didn't want to give a full explanation at first. I thought I captured his personality pretty well, regardless of the circumstances of the shot.

I bet there are a lot of famous photos of people that are interpreted completely different than the situation they are in when the photo is taken. Somehow the personality shows through.

You must have heard of how Karsh got that great image of Winston Churchill with the scowl on his face?
Apparently what Karsh did was set up the camera and pose, but at the last second he snatched Churchill's cigar out of his hand then snapped the shutter. He captured the Churchill persona perfectly:) True story BTW.
Andre

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/18/2006
Great story Andre! I didn't know that! I guess much of the planned shots turn better when something unplanned happens, like a lab experiment!

Srna Stankovic   {K:115434} 2/4/2007
I like the grain and tone here, Andre! I think it really suits the mood of the shot and his pose. Exellent impressive and expressive tender portrait of your son !!!
