Lovely, Jacques. Thank you for your comments on my photos. Many of them are according to your style. You asked me about Mate. It is a grass, originally drank as a kind of tea by the local Indians. Then forbidden by the Jesuite monks because they thought it to be a drug, but then the Indians would not work, so it was re-instated. An attept to grow it artificially did not succeed until it was discovered that the seeds were swallawed by birds and only upon being excreted would they grow, so now they were cultivated in heat & humidity. The drink contains a Caffein-like element, is drunk throughout South America (& here, by people from there) & is a social occasion, with the metal "Straw" through which it is drunk being passed among friends. The drink is prepared from the dry leaves inside a dried-out fruit of the squash (cucumber) family, specially prepared. In South America people walk the streets with a bottle of hot water under their one armpit & the container with the mate in the other, drinking & filling up constantly.
