This frame is a new type for me that I've been using a lot lately, but I have a seen others on Usefilm do something very similar so I thought I'd try it.
I do it in Photoshop CS2 (though it can be done in any recent Photoshop version and probably in other programs as well.
- I put the image on a new layer of its own (copy the background)
- Set the background color to white, then increase the canvas size by about 100 pixels
- Then I create a new layer and select the whole work (cntl-A), then Edit->Stroke 4 pixels of black (inside stroke) using the stroke dialog box. The deselect (cntl-D).
- I then select the drop shadow in the styles for the stroked layer and increase the size and decrease the distance of the shadow until it can be seen inside the whole frame
- In the main image layer I then select the empty space outside the image, invert the selection, create a new layer, select a light gray foreground color, then do an outside stroke of 2 pixels on the new layer.
That's it. Vary to taste. Hope that helped!

A nice simple composition with very few elements that makes this a strong image. I like the lighting on the apple and the stair case, however, I think the rug in the bottom right corner is a bit distracting from the subject. Still, I think you've done a very good job here.

Excellent lighting and contrasts, great definition, great use of primary colors: yellow (wood), red (apple) and blue (carpet) with white and dark lines. It would look perfect stylized into a painting! Excellent composition! The framing looks like a window into an open space, great frame style!

Thanks much Ina. I actually modeled this after the style of a contemporary painter named Micheal Zigmond whose work I admire. He does some spare still lifes such as this that feature bright sunlight in internal spaces. (see attachment)

Yes, Zigmond is a painter (oil on linen) and his stuff is photorealistic and faily minimalistic. I'm lucky enough to own 2 of his works (bought long before his work got into 5 figures USD!). He started as a local artist in my area 15+ years back. He's gone through different phases but the style of the work I attached is mostly what he does and what I like the best. Some of his florals are amazing. And yes, I'm certain he works from photos.
He's been an insiration to my still life photography, much as the 16-18th century dutch folks are a muse for you. Though I'll allow that your goals are the more ambitious, you are also more capable of reaching them if I may say! Aim high! And reach them or not, we sure are having fun, huh?

the part of light-shadows is so net, sharp, indeed an excellent work the clear part it is such, the dark part is excellent…

[the Giro d’Italia is a marvelous bike race.. furthermore in 2008 in championship of the cycling world it will be its in my town – Varese.. is not a big town, but an excellent field for cycling, many high and low, many hills and mountains, many lakes. if you want, the possibility of being is.. the Giro (like all the world) lets the beautiful one of the land see..]
