This leapt out at me from the thumbnails. You nailed her skin texture and tonality. Her expression is perfect. I am curious about the background on the right. It seems incongruent to me. However, your style is distinctive, very intriguing, and I've come to trust your compositional skills. Can you comment on your choice of balancing this beautiful expression with an industrial background?

Anne Brown   {K:815} 1/23/2002
One of the things that I thought was so genius about this image was the juxposition of the soft, curved, dark features of the woman against the light, hard feel of the industrial background. And knowing you Chris, this wasn't just a coincidence. Am I right??

Chris Blaszczyk   {K:610} 1/23/2002
Well, I had a couple of options and about three socounds to take this:) I liked this background just because as Anne said, it seamed to work as good contrast with this image. Nothing was staged and nothing was changed in photoshop (well... the letterbox format required some cropping).

Anne Brown   {K:815} 1/23/2002
So this wasn't staged? I want to take more people shots but dread imposing on people. Do you ask people if you can take their picture? What kind of response do you usually get?

Chris Blaszczyk   {K:610} 1/23/2002
There is a story behind this one. She was crossing the street and I knew I needed to take a photo of her. When she approached me I asked: "can I please take a photo of you?" She replied "no". I almost got down to my knees... put my hands together and said "please, please, please". I guess that worked:) I took just one photo and went on my way.

Chris Blaszczyk   {K:610} 1/23/2002
Anne, I have this starnge gift and know who is going to say yes. I even tried a couple of times to ask people I was sure wasn't going to allow it... and I was right every time. The problem with that is you normally have just one or two opporunities with one person. You have to act and think fast ...and always have your light meter ready:) My ratio is about 99%. BE HAPPY AND NICE WHEN YOU ASK.

Beautiful tones Chris and that shape of her head covering is dynamite. I like the contrast with the backgroud. What I really want is to hold the actual print so I can oogle the nice tones...
