I put this picture in the Critiquers Corner because I wish to have some feedback on the whole of the Kaleidoscope portfolio. Any suggestion or comment is welcome (negative as well)!

Hi Anna,
I'm not sure I see the Kaleidoscope theme, even when browsing through your portfolio, so I'm afraid I won't be able to comment on that. I do find this shot rather appealing, though, and I do see a strong connection with this shot and your previous two uploads.
In reference to those two other uploads, I think this one is the odd one out, as it contains more defined shapes, even though they're very abstract. Also, the two other photos bear a reference to a combination of solid matter and liquid, like drops flowing over a melting ice cube lit by various, multi coloured light sources. This one is different; the feel of the fluid i see in the other tow is less strong in this one, although the reflection and structure what I referred to as Ice is still very much present. I hope all this makes sense.
As to this particular shot, I think it's a bit closely composed on the lower side, especially compared to the top, left and right edge. That's only a minor detail, though. Furthermore, there seems to be some pollution in the surface / background of what ever it may be. That's rather distracting. (There are a few of those distortions / in the other two images as well) I presume you used a rather shallow DOF here (A pity you didn't fill in an estimate of the camera settings, it would make things much more easier to assess), and I think you could make it even more shallow. It would reduce the disrupting effect of the dust, and render the image even more abstract, focussing more on the use of colour than on the actual materials
It's always difficult to give a meaningful comment on an abstract, but I do like this one, as well as the other two combined, but I don't think they fit together, yet. That might still be possible if there's more to come, though.
Cheers,
Hugo

I'm glad you posted this because it pointed me to your portfolio. I spent time looking at the Kaleidoscope part of your portfolio. Of the images in that group, Apple is the most appealing to me. Perhaps it is because while there is an abstract form (by the way, incredible rich colors on that one), my mind can anchor in something familiar.
This image is more challenging to me. I like it, but find that it does not have the power of some of the other Kaleidoscope images. While I enjoy the colors seen in this one, the blurred (OOF) edges on the left seem too unresolved for me. The only place on the image that has any sharpness at all is in the upper right.
To me, it isn't a requirement that all images have sharpness somewhere...but in this abstract I want to reach up and focus the screen a bit.
The composition is a little odd to me, like two separate images subjects placed into one image. In a way I want the camera to pull back a bit so that more of the field is included, and I can get a better understanding of the relationship of these two forms.
All that said, let me say again that I like this image. The Kaleidoscope images are strongest as a collection rather than as individual images, although there are certainly some very strong images within the portfolio.
I am fascinated by what you have achieved, and only wish I knew what you were actually shooting. Is it water drops on a frosted glass?

Thanks a lot Mary for your very interesting comment and for the time you spent analyzing the series! I am experimenting different reactions to these pictures. Some people would like to see something more defined to satisfy their attention. Other people prefer something completely undefined to keep their fantasy free to invent a "meaning",. Surely there is other people just thinking:"what is this shit!". You spotted some of the weak points of this image, especially on the composition side. You are right as well when you say that some images of the series are strongest than others. One thing I could say is that I like the idea of a picture that can been watched at the same way as listening to instrumental or electronic music. Leaving the sensations free to flow, without having the need of rationalize the meaning of the sound (or the image). Thank you for the other comment as well. It is a Romanesque Cauliflower, a very curious vegetable!

Anna, I would leave the Chev in the shed (although up close to that beast, you could probably get some pleasing abstracts if you haven't already).....keep exploring the fantastic images like your 'Gold pins' and 'Red cave' plus this shot......you have great imagination and the ability to see images in the simple things around you, there's another.....'Desire for a photo...' this is great, well done. cheers, david.
