About This is a favourite place of mine. I've often tried to capture this busy arcade. The colours are so varied, and the mixture of light (especially at dusk, when the daylight from the glass roof is losing out to the artificial light of the stores underneath). This time the dusk was turning into night... I'm particularly pleased with the placement of the figure at bottom right. With a bright frame finder you can see people coming into the frame, not just the image itself, as you do with an SLR. It's one of the advantages of the rangefinder camera.

The color and clarity are outstanding. Wonderful shot it's so clear right on out to the end of the hall. Wow Roger nicely done.

whueee .... that must have been tough getting this composition. You did an excellent job. I would have never had the patience to hang in there...just would have pulled my hair out really...lol...not that there is much left...

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 3/13/2006
Thanks, Tim. Do I gather that we have the same, quintessentially masculine hairstyle? (you never see bald women, right?)

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185017} 3/13/2006
Hi Roger, I do like this shot, and I agree with you that the image in the lower right is pretty well placed. The cut off foot is something that disrupts it a bit, IMO.

The composition is very well balanced; a good angle in combination with POV. Also, the exposure is spot on. Good photo, and a very lively street scene.

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks, Hugo. I actually thought that having a bit of the shoe outside the frame somehow made her slightly blurred movement into the frame more, um, plausible. Special pleading, maybe, but I was not unhappy with it when I noticed it. It is VERY hard to place moving people within an SLR frame, which is one of the reasons I still like to shoot rangefinders.

great capture.. looks like everyone is walking the same direction :) I might crop just a little off the top (where the sign is cut off) and may just a little off from the left to bring more focus to the people.. good work.

A truly superb image which in normal terms could do with a trim at the top but somehow I thik it would detract from this image.Outstandng colours and clarity.

Jon Sobolik   {K:225} 3/28/2006
I'd crop it at the hem of the womens white coat.

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 3/28/2006
Thanks, Jon, but I wonder why? I can't see what it does for the image, I'm afraid... I'm quite open minded about it and want it took its best but I just don't get it.

Jon Sobolik   {K:225} 3/30/2006
Obviously everyone likes different things. I would crop it near the hem because I see two very different things in this image. A very busy area and an are that is not. The floor to the left of the women draws my eye because it is open and comparitively empty. I can't help the attraction but I find little of interest there. By cropping it out I find my eyes are very active and happy exploring all the rest of the image and not drawn to the empty area. (because it isn't there)

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 3/30/2006
Thank you, Jon. That makes sense... I had seen the empty area as an arrow--perhaps a double-headed arrow--pointing up into the busy area, to which everyone is walking. But you have a good point there. Thanks for the feedback (and for bothering to reply!).

Great composition, depth, and colors, Roger. You could consider the possibility of cropping a bit of the bottom, maybe up to the bottom of that rectangle in the floor. The empty floor space in the foreground sort of works against the feeling of the hustle and bustle of the arcade. It really is a minor (petty?) thing considering I think it's a wonderful photo.
