"One blemish was cloned out", soon we will all come to expect everything be visually spotless, not ripe/unripe. Be that as it may, I do it to so don't worry. This is the sort of simple image that begs for people to chime in and offer all sorts of opinions. We will see if they do. First is the issue of depth of field, do you have the right amount or not enough here? I like things in focus so I should want more but the blur leads the mind to understand the depth and curvature so I say leave it alone. More DOF would flatten the image and detract. Next is stem going up or down. My instinct is they way you have it. Lastly where is the stem in the frame. I might have put it a bit higher if I thought about it. There you have it - my $0.02 (what ever happened to the cent key?)

John, thanks for your detailed analysis. The stem was my biggest challenge. I was working with an old file, and wanted to crop it so that the stem pointed into the image, but was placed at the 'rule of 3rds' intersection in the lower left, with the stem pointing toward the image center. I was limited by the file itself (or actually by poor planning on my part back when I shot it). I'll keep your remarks and the remarks of the other commenters in mind for the next shoot. THANKS!

Nice to see you uploading in the CC area too...:) Reading your about, I'll let the noise for what it is. Concidering you shot this at 1600 ISO, the amount of noise isn't too bad either!
I do like the composition in this photo, as well as the subtle textures and high level of details in the sharp areas. Due to the shallow DOF, there's, relatively, a small area in focus. Normally, I would suggest it's a bit too shallow, but as you've placed all dominant subjects in focus, I do think it works well here. Even more so as the out of focus areas wouldn't offer much more information, as the texture of the apples' skin must've been pretty consistent all over, and the infocus area provides einough information already. In fact, the longer I look at it, the more useful the shallow DOF becomes, as it creates a subtle feel for the geometry of the apple.
The green tone of the apple, including the "condensation" on it is very life like, juicy and fresh. I'm not sure about the colour of the stem, though. IMO, it looks a bit too red. Perhaps desaturating the red levels a notch would solve this.
The lighting is nice and soft; any softer, and I think the water drops would no longer have been visible, although it would reduce the (already subtle) shadow of the stem. A bit stronger lighting might've emphasised the waterdrops, but would also increase the shadow as well as create a blown out area, which is by no means an improvement.
To be realy pricky, I think if you'd cropped just a wee bit off the bottom of the image, the composition would be closer to the rule of thirds, but then again, who cares about that anymore?

Basically, I'm with John, with one difference. It takes me more words to say exactly the same. But on the bright side, that's even cheaper per word...

hi,great angle chosen and filling the frame makes this very arty...it would be wonderful to have other fruit done this style and all be a consistent square format to print n' hang in a kitchen,or dining area...makes me want to shoot some fruit!..LOL..oh yeah,like the selective focus and am surprised it isn't that noisy /grainy for 1600iso,but i shoot film and not familiar yet with digital ...regards,gayle
