About A Red-kneed Tarantula. Beautiful stripe patterns change with each molting . . . increasing the intensity of the colors. The hairs on the abdomen are poisonous; he can rub them off with his legs. The bite, of course, is venomous. This little guy makes a great pet, is handled often (yes, bare-handed) and never makes too much noise.

Good detail with nice color, I also like the boarder, very creative work

Thank you for the comment on my photo 45 degree lighting

I saw one at Death Valley a couple of years ago that was crawling across the road I like to have take a picture of but in was on a hill and curve and no safe place to pull off. This is a nice one. Like the dof and image.

Nessa:
Sure he's mine. My little grandaughter Cydney finally overcame her fear enough to hold him! (She also has a fear of spiders). Thanks for the kind words.

Susan:
Thank you. I should point out that Plato here has one of his legs at about 45 (or 46) degrees too! Appreciate your comments greatly.

Robert:
The ones usually in Death Valley are the cinnamon tarantulas. They are very hairy, can be handled relatively safely by hand, and look scary. They don't often have the bright colors which do not help them in the desert. I appreciate your feedback.

Yikes! That is a creepy critter. Good color, light and details in this image.

Pat Ziegler {K:21585} 3/15/2006
Cool shot, reminds me of one of mine, http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=828549

Doyle D. Chastain {K:99842} 3/15/2006
Thanks Laura:
They have been found in South American trees with 24 inch leg spans preying on birds.

Pat:
Good shot you referred to . . . albeit a much smaller spider. I'd - suprisingly - be more worried about the spider you showed biting me than this big boy.

Nice job Doyle!

Doyle D. Chastain {K:99842} 3/16/2006
Thanks Sheldon.

Kay McIntire {K:11787} 3/16/2006
Just beautiful- I have always liked tarantulas, but we seldom see them here in the wild anymore. I miss them! Never saw one this beautifully marked, though. Your pet?

Doyle D. Chastain {K:99842} 3/17/2006
Absolutely. The droppings are amonia based and evaporate and the neighbors never complain about the noise.

Hi Doyle
What an amazing tarantula! Although I wouldn´t like touching him, he really looks beautiful. Great details and colours in this photo.
Best wishes,
Annemette

Doyle D. Chastain {K:99842} 3/17/2006
Thanks Annemette: I guess you wouldn't be suprised to learn that there are more than a few people who would decline an opportunity to hold this guy.

frightening... great details, I think I can feel it on my arms BRRRR!

Doyle D. Chastain {K:99842} 3/18/2006
Thanks Jacques . . . have no fear, he crawls on my bare arm all the time.

I'm not a hundred % sold on the frame, but this is a 'big league' macro! Phenomenal color DOF and focus.

Doyle D. Chastain {K:99842} 3/25/2006
I'm with you on the framing . . . just something new I tried.

Thilo Bayer {K:50301} 3/31/2006
Uh, that's scary stuff =)

great detail and creative frame.

Thilo

Doyle D. Chastain {K:99842} 3/31/2006
Thanks for the comment Thilo . . . but he looks much scarier than he really is. Kinda' like a dog's bark is worse than his bite although, admittedly, I prefer not to be bitten by this one!

Shirley D. Cross {K:143243} 8/23/2006
Beautifully done, Doyle! I'm not fond of spiders, either, but have to admit I find some of the furry jumping spiders kinda cute...just don't want any of them ON me!:)

Doyle D. Chastain {K:99842} 8/23/2006
Now Shirley . . . they don't want US on THEM either! LoL! My lil granddaughter Cydney let me put Plato on her head for a UF 'above your head' project photo. (http://www.usefilm.com/image/1085583.html)
Now . . . if SHE was willing . . . hehehehee.....then surely YOU'D have no problem!
;)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Shirley D. Cross {K:143243} 8/23/2006
Well, I would trust YOU, Doyle, but it would be hard for me.:)

Davide Radice {K:4930} 8/24/2006
Impressive colors and a nice frame
(and and impressive spider as well..)
Davide.

Doyle D. Chastain {K:99842} 8/24/2006
Thanks Davide this spider's bite is worse than his bark . . . but . . . then again, he doesn't bark and has never bitten anything larger than a bug! (So Far)!
:)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~
