Groet,

hugo

Old version

Amit Saha   {K:3128} 3/21/2006
A wonderful serene composition. Unless you say its DV, people dont relate that its salt in the f/g and not water :)
Its an enchanting place indeed. I havent faced such a challenge as DV in capturing its enormity in a single shot...hope to get it with pan-images next time.
BTW, when did you visit it?

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/21/2006
Hi Amit, I visited Death Valley last month, from 22 to 28 February... And I've seen the flowers you shot too...:) Such a rugged and mesmerising place, it really made me feel small amid the vast landscape and wilderness.

i agree, it's very difficult to capture those salt flats. If you look at Tom Rumlands' photos of this place (just click the link) I think that's the best way to capture it. But then again, I believe the best way to get a grasp at the beauty of nature is to actually go there. And that's what I did after seeing Tom's photos....

The serenity of this sunset was just breath taking! I did shoot a 39 photo panoramic of the Devil's Golf Course, but Photoshop crashes when I try to stitch the images together....:(

Thanks for your comment, hope to see more of your DV photos, too!

Cheers,

Hugo

Omar Rifaat   {K:10132} 3/21/2006
Truly a magic light specimen, Hugo. The light and tones are breathtaking. I'm putting sheets of white paper against my monitor experimenting with different crops, I think you could get several equally lovely shots with different crops.

Hugo:

I'm eagerly awaiting 39 JPEGs in my inbox. I'll stitch and you can take it from there.

I did not realize that was salt - I thought it was water. What a strange place...

Joćo Tavares   {K:39099} 3/21/2006
Great light in a beautiful classic landscape here dear Hugo well done my friend!!!
cheers

Lori Stitt   {K:74434} 3/21/2006
HI Hugo,

Perfect title for this one, indeed it is magic.
I love the color of the sky, the softness quality of light, shades of the mountains.

And the silver strip in the water.
Very nice.

I viewed the image in the comments section, and I much prefer the one I'm commenting on. I think the one below is a bit too contrasty.

A beautiful capture!

Have a GR8 day/evening,
Lori :)

Lori Stitt   {K:74434} 3/21/2006
Me again.......and you were in my part of the world. Hope you had a good time in CA! I've only been to Death Valley once, want to take another trip there.
L:)

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17525} 3/22/2006
This image captures the mood that I've felt when in Death Valley. It is the starkness of the place as well as the endless and vast horizon that makes a person feel so tiny. I love being there, but always feel a bit like I'm intruding on a place that doesn't belong to me.

In this image, I especially like the layered look of the background. Any later in the day and you are likely to have lost that soft feeling. The amount of haze in the atmosphere serves you well here.

Beautiful work!

Gary Dyck   {K:11822} 3/22/2006
Wow, great shot, Hugo! Perfect exposure and composition. Looks a bit like the stark beauty of the arctic to some extent (or some places in the arctic) though I imagine the day time temps to be a little warmer than up there. Truly does look like a magical place in this picture. Well done! Cheers, Gary

Tom Ross   {K:6432} 3/22/2006
Can't say why I like this image, but I guess that says a lot.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
LOL! Much appreciate, Tom! Probably the best one-liner comment I've ever received... Thanks!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Hi Omar, thanks for the feedback. Now you mention it, I'm sure there are many crops possible. I just didn't think of cropping this image. The only thing I did is straighten the horizon, but left the composition untouched. Just curious, what other compositions did you have in mind? I'd appreciate it if you would show me what you're thinking of...

Cheers,

hugo

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59679} 3/22/2006
BEAUTIFUL and soooooo peaceful!

Jeanette

Omar Rifaat   {K:10132} 3/22/2006
Hugo,
Just running out to catch a flight, so a quick and dirty. I know the blue line has an extreme effect on the crop, but I just made some small adjustments on this one. A little less water.

Omar Rifaat   {K:10132} 3/22/2006
And another, of course from me a proponent of the square image!
Just ideas, as I say, playing with white sheets of paper...

an other beautifull shot!
congratulations for the award!

Steve Aronoff   {K:21276} 3/22/2006
Hugo! Congratulations on the two well deserved awards. The scene is really beautiful. The only change I might make, and its simply a matter of personal taste, would be to increase the contrast a bit. I think it would bring the tone of the dark land in the foreground more in balance with the tones of the mountains. I've attached my concept. At any rate, it's a minor point about a job well done!!
Bravo!!
Steve

more contrast

Markus Scholz   {K:22743} 3/22/2006
Wonderful mood you captured here, Hugo. I like the yellowish haze;)

Semplicemente mozzafiato!

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 3/22/2006
Hugo,

Congrats on the double award for this image! Well deserved!

I like the new version very much. The sky, and water hold up much nicer, and give a much more uniform balance to the image. What's even more pronounced in this, is the shaft of light in the haze that gently rests over the background mountain.

Beautiful image. Very timeless!

cheers,
-Joel

Don Loseke   {K:32494} 3/22/2006
This has such beautiful pastel tones Hugo. You have a nice proportion of thirds in the composition. Beautiful picture. Can be almost tot he abstract side. Don.

taran     {K:1546} 3/22/2006
For some reason my conversions are always less powerful on UF. It's not the compression artifacts that kill me however, as much as what it does to color. Maybe its because I work in ProPhoto color space, maybe its because I don't convert to SRGB, maybe its something else. Everything looks great on my monitor, and in print, but sometimes on upload here, my colors get knocked to %^$&*%@. Reds are especially susceptible to this I have noticed. UF might want to provide a tutorial, now that some of the dust has settled, which details the best way to get the most out of our images here, maybe some kind of workflow that includes extra saturation or something. Just a thought.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Hi Lori!

Good to hear from you, I had a great time in CA.... 8 days to spent in Vegas and DV, awesome clash of entities...:)

If I may correct you, there's no water in this photo, what you're looking at is a salt flat with the first rays of the sun racing towards me; this lasted for less than 15 seconds, but it was absolutely spectacular!

I agree about the contrast in the one below; the colours are off too, and as taran suggests, a colour compensation tutorial would be very useful, I've noticed the change before, but not as big as in this case. I'm still not overly satisfied with the tones... Need to print this photo first to make a decent comparison, though.

Take care,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Hi Mary Sue, thanks for your feedback, couldn't have phrased the feeling you describe better.... My thoughts exactly... When the sun hit the salt flat in the far end, it lasted only 15 seconds or so before it touched me, but it seemed an eternity; the hues, feel and light changed in one big, fast paced gradient, and was so incredible awesome, that it's impossible to catch that in a single photo....

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Hi Gary, Yeah, it sure was magical that morning! As I replied to Mary Sue:

When the sun hit the salt flat in the far end, it lasted only 15 seconds or so before it touched me, but it seemed an eternity; the hues, feel and light changed in one big, fast paced gradient, and was so incredible awesome, that it's impossible to catch that in a single photo....

Thanks for your feedback!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Hi Omar, thanks a lot for showing me what you had in mind, I really appreciate it! I think options one and two are definitely a good alternative, yet I think cropping off the salt flats in the fourth is a bit too strong, as to me, it cuts off the essence of this photo, the sun hitting the salt flats... But I see what you mean, as it does emphasise the layered background mountains very well...

Hope you had a good flight,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Hi Ursula, Thanks for your comment... Hope you don't mind me correcting you, but this place is actually called the "Devils' Golf Course", but it isn't a golf court. the white is a salt flat, surrounded by mud structures...:) The next two photos in this series will show you more of this bit of nature...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Hi Steve, thanks for the feedback, very much appreciated!

I do like the higher contrast version you created, and I've toyed with that thought too. Have you seen the original version I uploaded and pasted underneath this one? I removed that one, because I wasn't satisfied with the hues, but it has approximately the same amount of contrast as your version.

Valid point, too, to bring the tone of the dark land in the foreground more in balance with the tones of the mountains. It simplifies the scene, which fits rather well with the serene atmosphere of that place.

My line of thought was to create / preserve that distance, as those mountains are quite far away in the actual scene. The lower contrast brings the mountains more to the background, I think.

Difficult one; can't really say which one I like better; guess it's fairly subjective, too.

Thanks a lot! Very good critique, and marked as such!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Hi Joel, Thanks for your comment.... You're looking at the salt flats in Death Valley, not water; very difficult to capture and actually have it look like salt, though....:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Marian Man   {K:62533} 3/22/2006
wow!!!! wow!!!!!!!
well desrved double award dear Hugo for this beautiful serene landscape!!!!!!
congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Hi Don, thanks for the feedback, Now you mention it, I have to agree about the level of abstractism in this photo... I promised to get back to the more common type of photography, right? So I guess this is for you...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Hi Taran, I fully agree with you. Such a tutorial would be very useful. But I've never seen the hue distortion as big as with my first upload, usually, I just take the change in tone for granted...

Thanks,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/22/2006
Ha Riny, dank je... Vier commentaren achter elkaar voor twee awards...:) Da's dubbel verdient! LOL!

Death Valley a favorite place on mine. Not easy to photograph but you made a charming image of the sunrise. Serene with the yellow promising some heat coming soon, Horizon classicely i/3 from the bottom edge colors enhance the mood. Well done Hugo. Regards, Gil

Hi Hugo

Leave it as it is and move on......lets see more of this magical place...I know you will understand, my friend..!

Garold Jennings   {K:2513} 3/23/2006
Beautiful shot Hugo. I think that you definitely caught an unreal scene. I thought the shot was of water but now I see that it is the salt flats. Wonderful colors.

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 3/23/2006
woah. salt. that's insane. To think that it's one thing, and believe it...and then to find out it's salt. Wow...i bet it was difficult!...did it look like water when you were there?

amazing.

cheers,
-joel

toru kona   {K:984} 3/23/2006
Hugo this evening. A ray of morning. It is a favorite photograph. It is Nipponian scenery.
Then. Thank you for significant comment. It is a so old film.
Thank you from now on.

Ron Wilson   {K:18161} 3/23/2006
Very impressive. That's salt. It only lasts for 15 seconds? Wow. You gave it a minute and got a lifetime shot.

Rex Reynolds   {K:358} 3/23/2006
Hey dude
Great shot...as you well know its my kind of capture...i really like the softness of it over all...that area is so very harsh..your capture doesnt show that at all...good job my friend
Rex

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:75190} 3/23/2006
Hugo, since I can't compare this with the proofing, I do as if it were the prrofing here.

The whole atmosphere feels quite cold to me, though the colors of the upcoming sunlight are warm. This generates a contrast, some kind of tension that is not very often on such photos.

The one mountain stands behind a halo and the other in front of it - another tension here.

Together with the first I get the impression of an upcoming sunlight that was not meant for this valley. Strange!

And I like strange images most of all!

Tjaart van Staden   {K:920} 3/24/2006
Hugo, well done and thanks for the sharing. (The other notsogolden oldies that seems to get dusted off and displayed ad infinitum were getting just so tedious...)

Love your composition and wish I was there to capture these minimalist color scene. Technically and visually awesome.

Paul Lara   {K:75476} 3/24/2006
Oh, yeah!
Just as impressive as this shot is how quickly the light turned on you, Hugo, as shown in the next shot. Great catch.

NN     {K:26787} 3/24/2006
Hi Hugo! I had a quick glance at II, but this deserves to be on the front page; congrats! A magic capture, indeed ~ love the combination of cold and warm colours and the haze. Sea of salt; how cool is that?! A unique shot, so very beautiful!

Herman Pieters   {K:1332} 3/24/2006
Nice, not great, just nice, I don't understand how they can rate this a photo of the day tho, nothing that special about it.

Shelby Shumate   {K:9551} 3/24/2006
I don't know (Herman Pieters)... I really like this but everyone sees things differently. I have seen pictures that really weren't much & got rave reviews. Wait... this is salt? Not water? Wow!

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/24/2006
Huh? I don't follow you. Do you expect me to have an answer to that question?

Herman Pieters   {K:1332} 3/24/2006
let me think..
no

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:176263} 3/24/2006

Hi Hugo,

this time on the landscape path? =) Well wow, the simplicity and the tonal range is just amazing. there is a lot of depth in the image. maybe a better window than my real one at the moment ;-)

nice work. Thilo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/24/2006
thanks.
H.W.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/24/2006
Hi Gil, Having finally been in DV, I can see why it's a favourite place of many. What an awesome place! Thanks for you comment.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/24/2006
Hi Manu, I hear you, there's already one more, and possibly many more to come...:) Thanks!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/24/2006
Hi Joel, In all fairness, I didn't make the connection with water, as these saltflats are easily accessible, and we walked out there with our gear to wait for the sunset. And being out there, the textures and the solid state removed the physical reference. I did make the same mistake when I first saw the photos by Tom Rumland of this place.

Cheers, and thanks for the feedback,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/24/2006
Thank you for your kind comment, Toru, Much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/24/2006
Hey Rex,

Good to hear from you! It's the light that smooths things; if you look at the next one, the light already makes things much more pronounced. Amazing how this place changes continuously.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/24/2006
Hi Nick, it was freezing cold out there, until the sun peeked out above the mountains. Pretty spectacular sight, it made me feel immensly small in this overwhelming scenery. I wouldn't know if this type of sunrise is typical for the area; I got the impression that the haze was rather unexpected; but it created an awesome effect for sure!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/24/2006
Hi Thilo, yeah, landscapes it is. But rest assured, that's also rather temporary...:) It sure was an awesome "window" though.

Cheers,

hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/24/2006
Dear Roby, How's the little one? Good to hear from you, always a delight! Take care, and enjoy the time with the family!

Janet Marie ;-)

Dave Arnold   {K:54646} 3/28/2006
Very beautiful, Hugo, congrats of Staff Choice. Love the glow of sunrise in this, looks so clean and refreshed.

Can't decide if that is a snow field or water in the foreground. I really need to get to Lenscrafters, I guess.

Mark Longo   {K:12757} 3/28/2006
Congrats on this marvelous Staff Choice, Hugo. This shot in particular is especially deserving, though I very much like the others you have posted in this series. The light is wonderful, the haze having shown the actual crack of dawn. Masterful exposure choice, superb capture. I am glad that your early hours outdoors were so well rewarded!

This being death valley, one supposes that this is not a body of water we are looking at. So well reflected is the hue of the sky that it does appear as water. Especially the clear blue line at the foot of the mountains. Again, perfect exposure!

Best regards,
Mark

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/28/2006
Hi Dave, thanks for your comment. In answer to your deliberations, I think I can help out... It's neither snow nor water, but a salt flat...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Bruce Harper   {K:5194} 3/28/2006
Just had a look at all three in this series Hugo, this one is my favourite because of the ethereal quality of the light and that the salt really looks like water in this one. Its amazing how much the light has changed in the three photos, the second one it is obvious that the 'lake' is of salt, and the light is more natural but it is a close second because I like the composition with some of the shore in the foreground. The third is also good and worthy of being in the series to show even more of the shore.

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:176263} 3/28/2006
and well well well.. also for the staff chice capture my friend!
have a nice week..

cheers

Hi Hugo,

VEry nice tones here .. suberb even shades of blue and yellow. I especially like the blue strip just under the mountains. Great and well done on the award.

I recently took some more shots at a club with the slow flash sync. They can be viewed at http://electric-circus.net/site/forum/viewtopic.php?t=110

You will have to register to view but it only takes a few seconds and you wont be spammed! I got some very intriging results - if you liked the last one you will defiantley love these!

Ah yes. Beautiful, evocative... I'd take this anyday over anything you could produce with a lensbaby!

nice capture.. like the simplicity of the image. I know exactly where this was taken.. nice work. I thought about uploading some more Death valley photos.. congrats on the award.

Mesmerising indeed! Great landscape Hugo. I like the division of the image in 3 horisontal bands - each with its own colour tones, contrast and texture. Distinctly seperate (earth, sky & water) yet moulded together with a wonderful soft, glowing light. Eye candy!! Congratulations!

Hi Joggie, thanks for your comment. Just one small correction, you're looking at the sun striking the Death Valley salt flats, no water in this shot, although I admit it sure looks like water. Maybe it's the tone, don't really know what I could've done to remove the likeness with water... any ideas?

Cheers,

Hugo

Joggie van Staden   {K:38530} 3/29/2006
Hi Hugo - I dont know the place and was totally fooled. The time of day is perfect for this then, with the full sun on the salt it would be very difficult to balance the different elements.
".. remove the likeness with water.." The only option I can think of is to shoot at a lower angle so that the grainy texture of the salt becomes visible. I dont really think it matter though - the fact that it is salt, looking like water, make so much more interesting. Take care.

Hi Paul, thanks for your comment; I'd say go for it, I always like to see other DV photos. I must warn you, though, they don't go down well with many (at least mine aren't...:))

Cheers,

Hugo

Congratulation on the 2 awards at the same time! It is a praiseworthy illustration indeed! The tone and the light are really supernatural! It is a fashionable image like a watercolour painting!
My best regards to you: Maxime

Hi Meldijana, thanks for the comment.... The name isn't so strange when the sun hits the salt flats in the middle of the day... (it isn't water you're looking at, but salt) Very harsh and barren environment, with temperatures that reach upto 56 degrees C...

Cheers,

Hugo

Meldijana Omerbegovic   {K:4089} 5/2/2006
Thanks,Hugo, for the explanation ..in fact I could realize that if I had read all the comments..so that's the reason for such a strange name..there are probably few plants' species that can survive in such environment and they are probably very special.
Very nice image, thank you for sharing this unique atmosphere..
Kind regards
Meldijana

Hi Mark,

A bit late, but thanks for your feedback. I think this is the strongest image in this series, mainly because of the layered effects of the colours. But maybe also because I found this one of the most impressive and awesome sights I've ever seen; the way the light hit the salt flats and moved rapidly towards us, and the consequent and almost immediate change in appearance and temperature was just breath taking.

Cheers,

Hugo
