Hi Gerhard,
Comparing this photo to the previous one, the choice for the better one is realtively easy; for me, the previous (panoramic format) photo is much better.
The reason is, that by reducing the use of silhouettes in the foreground, the impact of this shot is also reduced. As the trees on the left blend in with the dark clouds, the image seems to fade a way to the left a bit. I think that creates an unnecessary unbalance in the photo
One of the stronger features of the other photo was, IMO, the way the silhouettes in the foreground blended in nicely with the black frame; That's obviously not the case with the white border in this one,
I still believe a true, large sized panoramic photo of the previous one would really bring out it's beauty. That could possibly also work with this one, if you could increase the contrast between the trees on the left and the dark sky, as well as cropping off a bit off the black part of the image.
On a more positive side, I think the colours in the top right quadrant, as well as the feathery sky are very well captured; excellent tones! The feel of the abstract image you refer to is stronger than in the previous one, too, but although that is a nice element, I'm not convinced it does justice to the photo nor to the sunset...
Cheers,
Hugo

You've really captured a beautiful sky, truly stunning, but as a viewer, i lose focus because there's too much dark 'interference' in the foreground. I would have either just focused in on the sky, or find something that produces a well defined silhouette in the foreground.. nice work though :)
