About I thought I might fool around with this image of some back/side lit cat-tails. There was a slight mist rising as the late afternoon sun backlit the fluffed up bullrushes.
A duplicate layer was converted to greyscale, then applied high contrast and gave it a heavy blur. The blurred duplicate layer was placed on top of the "straight" layer and adjusted the opacity until the subtle colours came through.

this portayal in a soft focus works very well, there is a sinister feel here, congrats on a very fine image Andre

Kathy Hillard   {K:25721} 4/1/2006
My first reaction to this was not a positive one, Andre, but as I look at it more I find it interesting and definitly unusual! I think you've created a good abstract here. Personally I think it would be even better if about a third of the upper trees were cropped out. But, or course, that would totally change the feel of this one. Keep fooling around, Andre! You're coming up with some good stuff!
Kathy

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/1/2006
Hi David,
Since you mention "sinister". I was trying to think what this reminded me of. Have you ever seen M Night Shyamalan's movie, "The Village"?
I would like to think there might be a little of that feel to this one.
Thanks for the comment and visit David.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/1/2006
Thanks Kathy,
I think David hit the nail on the head with the word "sinister".
It may not be the most likeable image, but I think it will bring out some reaction from people.

Unique capture! Very nice composition.

Encanto de imaen... un contraluz que hace resaltar las texturas de esas espigas... Felicitaciones!

Love the result of this fool around as you say.
Great job

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/1/2006
Thanks Alicia,
My title was originally going to be "Enchantment". I'm glad you used the same words to describe it.

Thanks Can Ik,
I think it's good to try some different things once in a while.
And thanks for visiting my portfolio.

Basicly a good photo and with the manipulation afterwards it became a lovely image!

Thanks Karina,
And thanks for visiting!

Very nice backlighting on the cattails, Andre, and the work to emphasize it is very well done! I like the ghostly effect of the lighting, against the darker trees of the background.
Dave.

Kes     {K:18269} 4/3/2006
I like it!

The cattails look like they're on fire!

Rashed Abdulla   {K:153041} 4/3/2006
very creative and very pleasant image to view, the back lit is wonderful and very effective, all of the best my friend

Following my AOL connection problems I am now back again Andre.
There is a definite dark mood to the composition my friend but sinister might be too strong a word. I too like the use of the word 'enchantment' for it brings the feeling of magic and mystery in the depths of an enchanted woods where witches gather for good and evil purposes. I love what you are doing in your continued series of experimentation Andre. Keep it up, 'see' you again soon. My very best wishes to you as always....Ray

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/3/2006
Hi Andre,

I like your work here with the bluriness and the several layers of dimension. good work my friend. The sun makes a fabulous effect.

Thilo

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/4/2006
Thanks Dave,
I could have done a pretty straight version of this one that would have looked okay, but I'm glad I played around with it. It seems to have a greater dimension and more interpretations this way. I know some purists don't like this sort of thing, but what the heck...
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/4/2006
Thanks Kes,
I agree. In a way the back light has given last year's cattails a new vibrancy.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/4/2006
Thanks Rashed,
I thought, when I was taking this image that the lighting would come out interesting. Even the straight version before photoshop treatment had effective back light.

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/4/2006
Thanks Ray,
The reason why I agreed with the "sinister" description is that it reminded me so much of that movie "The Village"
Enchantment definitely works for me too! There may also be some faeries hiding in those bullrushes too!
Thanks for your encouragement Ray. I don't think I will ever get tired of experimenting with images like this. Even if I get some bad reviews, I'll keep trying. :)

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/4/2006
Hi Thilo,
I think what you mention about the layers giving the image dimension is what I am most pleased about with this one. I like the way the trees in the background seem separated in distance from the bullrushes. The blurred layer almost creates a 3d image. Maybe a little too gimmicky? You only live once, right?
Andre

Rina     {K:26519} 4/4/2006
I think your fooling around is pretty awesome actually. Gimme dark, sinister, enchanting anytime. I don't have a problem with the crop at all. In fact, if you did crop as Kathy suggests, I think that "sinister" mood would be lost without all the wicked looking branches. Great stuff Andre.

I'm going to have to add you to my friends list so I don't forget to come back for more... :)

Cheers
Rina.

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/4/2006
Thanks Rina,
Sometimes I get in those kind of moods where that is the only kind of image I want to do. And then I'll go for a while doing nothing but straight conventional images.
I would be honoured to have you add me to your friends list!
ps

Hope you find some things you like :)

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/4/2006
Hi Andre, creative use of available light. the high contrast creating the silver lining, as well as the DoF, distancing the trees in the background nicely from the cat-tails is very nice. Creative post-processing, too. Works well, although I think a slightly different technique, using a more selective mask would maybe result in a better image quality. Not very sure about that, though. Cool image!

Cheers,

hugo

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/4/2006
Hi Hugo,
Thanks for the comments.
I do tend to agree with you about the quality aspect. I like playing around with this type of image, but I know in the bottom of my heart, the straight, well exposed shot has a better chance of being a "quality image". I just can't resist playing with them :)
With this one, the original had an entirely different look to it. Especially the trees in the background. A couple of weeks ago I did a few other landscapes and some dead florals using the blurred layer process. They came out with varying degrees of success. Again... by no means could the quality be considered very good, but the effect was interesting, and I had fun doing them.
I'll keep at it, trying different sorts of changes to the layers and see what happens.

Great texture. marvelous composition. superb.

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 5/29/2006
Thanks Jose,
As you can see, there was a little experimentation going on whe I made this one :)
Andre

James Cook   {K:36725} 9/22/2006
Going fully b&w I don't think works as well as the other photographs where some color is retained. I do, however, really like the eerie glow around each cat tail.

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 9/23/2006
Hi James,
For some reason, this one is one of my favourites that I did with that process. I agree the colour is very subtle in this one and the B&W tends to dominate those trees in the background. I like the glow of the cat tails too. This one can play tricks on your eyes as well. If you stare at it too long, it will come alive on you :)

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:89012} 3/10/2007
Well, what can I say! Even if my attitude is a rather raw one when it comes to photography, I just have to accept that your alteration resulkted in such a really suggestive image, Andre!

Suggestive and natural - obviously a very difficult thing to do, if not wanting to fall in the category of simple kitsch. Alone the shining contours of the plants are an eye catcher - not to speak about the very intriguing silence that this one conveys!

Excellent work which makes me rethink about the possibilities of digital alteration.

Best wishes,

Nick

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 3/11/2007
Thanks again Nick,
These two images were taken quite some time apart. This one was a deliberate attempt at digital alteration to try a little impressionism.
It's fun to experiment a bit like this. I try not to take it too serious. But, I think I feel the same way you do. We still should attempt to master the basics at least before we do too much of this kind of thing. After-all, if we don't know what a good normal image looks like, how are we supposed to know what to alter for a specific effect?
Andre

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:89012} 3/11/2007
A very good question that you posed here, Andre! I'll keep that for future use when the hordes of "I am only playing around" photographers feel that I am preaching too much. ;-)

What I find very nice is that you didn't use the possibilities of digital manipulation to that extended degree that is only an explosion of effects in the eye of the spectator. You used it very wisely, and so the effect is subtle - and thus the photo has a very special look.

Much like a strong perfume that shouldn't be used by the pound. Unfortunately, nowadays the range of the effects strength is usually used in such a way that... the perfume does smell nice anymore. ;-) But we live in times where the natural flavor of a strawberry is too weak and so we need additional chemicals to... support the natural flavor, so that it tastes even more natural than natural. :-)

Nick

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 3/12/2007
Another thoughtful analogy Nick. :)
The perfume idea is perfect. Too much is much worse than just a little hint. :)
Andre

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:89012} 3/12/2007
So, let's hope that our noses will gain back the level of sensitivity that avoids such overkills, Andre!

Same goes for our eyes and all other senses of course.

Nick
