Excellent landscape.Great colors.

A beautiful landscape Kes. I like how you captured the lone tree against that hillside. And the mountain with the dusting of snow. Very nice!
Susie

Luis Limchiu   {K:3168} 4/2/2006
Composition colors and exposure looks good, Kes. The low lying clouds adds the perfect touch.

Don Loseke   {K:32500} 4/2/2006
Shows the wide open spaces. Nice comopostion with the tree balancing the mountians. some ways I like the big sky and then again would make a nice panorama type of picture. Just a matter of personal preference Don.

Kes     {K:18269} 4/3/2006
Hi Don, I almost cropped this to look like a panorama! I'm just a big sky guy! But it does work either way...hmmm...maybe I'll crop it sometime and put it in the pan catagory.

Thanks for taking a look,
Kes

Rina     {K:26519} 4/3/2006
Picasa is a wonderful piece of programming, isn't it? Love what it does sometimes with "I'm feeling lucky" :) This is spectacular landscape Kes. I'm partial to big skies too and it works wonderfully here. Great composition and colour.

Cheers
Rina.

Kes     {K:18269} 4/3/2006
Hi Rina - Yes and it's free!!!
Sometimes the "I'm feeling lucky" option will result in washed-out areas, as if the tuning/highlights option was manually over applied. But often the shot is good-to-go with just one click! And it's free!

Thanks for taking a look,
-Kes

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 4/4/2006
Hi Kes,
An interesting composition, with all the big sky and minimum foreground. I like seeing the different types of landscapes posted here. It's good to be a little different. Even if a composition doesn't go by the book, doesn't mean it won't attract attention. Sometimes just the opposite is true :)
If you go back again, take all kinds of perspectives of the area for comparisons. Another great thing to do is take the same image at different times of the day and/or different weather conditions and seasons.
Andre

Kes     {K:18269} 4/4/2006
Hi Andre,
Very good points, and I agree that it's ok to break some rules sometimes. I thought the big sky gave a sense of vastness...it even makes the mountain look small. As for changing seasons, this might be a nice shot in moonlit snow!

If you look in the lower right corner area, you can see a fence post top. I'm thinking about shooting with the fence to gain more foreground, then pixeling out the fence later.

The Mamiya I mentioned in the "about" has a 100mm lens, and isn't wide enough to shoot this the same. I'm shooting from the bottom of a gully to get the tree skylined, and to frame it right I have to move too far back to shoot over the fence! I need a big step ladder! Dang!

Ok, in the things you shouldn't say department:
I had this shot set-up on my Canon F1 a couple of days ago...tripod.. metered...framed(after much moving around)...polarizing filter adjusted...looks FANTASTIC....self-timer........beep...beep...beeep......

....click.....

!!!

no film - anywhere.

Hi Kes,

A great story from the age of "digital"

Film!.... What film? We don't need no "STEENKING" fim!

Andre

Eb Mueller   {K:22505} 4/12/2006
Kes, nice change in approach! The big sky sure attracts attention. Though having lived in "big sky country," I also think there is a lot of truth in this rendering. Thanks also for commenting on my photo.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/13/2006
Hi Kes, fantastic image, i really like how the mountains ease off and gradually become less steep, and the three counters the composition very well. Great shot!

I like the composition with the clear sky, it adds to the atmosphere. very nice and pleasant feel.

Cheers,

Hugo

Kes     {K:18269} 4/13/2006
Hi Hugo,

Thanks so much! I posted this around the time you posted your "Desert Perspectives III" and thought there were similarities in the composition of the photos.

However, I'm hoping folks don't start hanging teapots in this tree!

Best regards,
-Kes

Guilherme Labarrere   {K:4921} 4/14/2006
Wow, very beautiful landscape. Congratulations. MY best wishes.

Derek Bair   {K:1440} 4/16/2006
I love when there's only one tree, it's so out of place, kinda like one sheep. They are almost always in a group with other of the same thing! At first I thought it would look better being cropped lower, but then the tree wouldn't look so lonely. I got bored so here's my version! Yours kinda reminds me of Brokeback Mountain but with brighter colors!

Kes     {K:18269} 4/16/2006
Hi Derek,
Yes, it's a happy place...this tree was for some reason running away from the others, so I yelled at it and it stopped long enough for me to get the shot. I have no idea where it is now.

You have great powers (some might say mystical) to be able to clone a mountain like that. Nice work!

Chbeers,
Kes

Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 4/20/2006
Hi Kes,

A well deserved award Kes. Amazing depth, great clarity, beautiful rich colours and a wonderful balance to the composition. Big empty skies with a powerful blue work very nicely for me, All the best......Ray

Great creativity here in a spot where most people would focus solely on the mountain. Nice one!

Great shot! Nice composition

Jinggoy Montenejo   {K:7255} 6/13/2006
Rule of thirds really play a good role here. Excellent capture. I would love to see a film version of this shot. May finally convince me to start learning to shoot with a film SLR and eventually MF (when the kids grow up and move out in 16 years....)

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99493} 6/20/2006
Wow Kes . . . awesome, perfectly composed (textbook rule of thirds) capture and Picasa2 ought to hire you for advertising! This is one stunning shot! Beautiful!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Toshi    {K:12024} 7/8/2006
An beautiful capture of this vast landscape Kes! A very well balanced composition to this one with the mountains and single tree holding it's ground. I think you made a great choice in including so much of the sky to emphasize the openess of the area - it introduces a nice soothing feel to the photo. Congrats on the award!

Jimmy  Piper   {K:5742} 7/16/2006
great shot, love the colours and contrast. comp and DOF are also spot on!

Alex Magana   {K:158} 8/26/2006
Kes,

Thank you for you comments on my "Glass Bowls" photo.

This photo is an excellent image. It gives me the feeling of peace and distance from the real world...and i love the colors in this image especially in this glass. Good Work!:)

Dave Arnold   {K:55551} 11/2/2006
Great landscape, Kes. Fabulous light and clear sky. I'm trying to remember where Coaldale is, I keep wanting to say Larimer Co. Seems I've been there but my brain is way too old.

Best wishes,
Dave

Hi Kes,
Congrats for getting this "Big Sky" image back on the front page again. Did you ever go back for more shots? I can't recall if you posted more from this spot.
Andre

Kes     {K:18269} 3/1/2008
Hi Andre,
Something far back in my mind wants to tell me I went back with some flim - no, it was film! I was playing with some 6x6 cameras there for awhile. I don't think I made it there with the Mamiya 23 though. At any rate, nothing to post, apparently.
