About "What is up above you will find below"

A saying that is often true - I am following up on a series on the "Appearance of Rust". This is number 10 in the series.

All photos were taken on subjects in my backyard which are in a natural process of oxidation. Most of it on an old painted 44 gallon drum. My aim is to find patterns, textures and colours that echoes possible scenes from this world and even the universe. So please take on your imaginary glasses and tell me if you see what I saw, or something different or ...nothing at all!

These are all at the super-macro level (magnification ratio of 2:1 and closer). I used my Nikon 105 micro lense with a 2.75X Panagor macro converter. All settings on manual, the built-in flash and /or ringflash on manual, full strength. Not tripod used. All photos are uncropped. All colours are as I found them - the only changes made were adjustments of brightness and contrast.

No comment on how to improve -

Just neat, and kind of creepy in an abstract kind of way.

That's a really nice abstract. Who would have thought that rust could look so good?

Larry Fosse   {K:66252} 4/12/2006
Reminds me of various early 20th century art forms....excellent abstract

Ann  Van Breemen   {K:13508} 4/12/2006
Wow, Joggie. I really thought this was a painting when I saw the thumbnail. I can definitely see a head with long hair and a sort of beak like a goose. Very weird, but so cool. Cheers, Ann.

Hi Joggie, very good combination between abstract and recognisable materials and textures, the portrait within the lines really adds to the appeal. I'm just curious about the origin of the white spots: reflection of the flash? Or something else? IMHO, they're a minor distraction from this unique coincidence and textures in the oily corroded surface. Other than that, some great tones and textures, as usual. Excellent find!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo - you are right, it is reflections from the flash. After my first few shots and after spending much time to remove them on one or two images I decided to change my approach to this series and restrict myself to that which I photographed - as closely as possible. In some of the photos they actually are a crucial element in the composition(e.g. "Expanding universe" and "Inca King"). For the others - i just live with it. One of my main aims with the series is to illustrate what one can do with a camera, with minimum intrusion from computer editing. Hope I have achieved that. Maybe at some later stage I would edit the outstanding ones. Regards and thanks for the comments.

Again, a brilliant concept with perfect execution. I am amazed at the oxidation series you are doing, so very neat.

Best,
Dave

I see this as the best yet in your series, Joggie! The swirls of lines are as if painted.
