Hi Joel, The most interesting part is IMO the about, I never realised / tought about the type of focus blur, and I'm not sure I fully understand why the horizontal blur is larger than the vertical. Could that have to do with the IS, even if it's turned off?
Good shot, and a very interesting subject, the saturation creates a rather unusual feel, and seems a bit too much. On the other hand, it does create a rather strong atmosphere. The track, leading the eye to the wagonb is very well composed. Maybe stepping a bit to the left, introducing a countering diagonal could've made it even more powerful.
Amazing how shallow the DoF is with a zoom lens, as thet's the primary issue here, this remark is also based on the fact that I now pay a bit more attention to it, though, and it's not a value-statement.

Nice study Joel. I see this lense has got you out of the studio and into the fresh air to say the least. Now you are on the prowl armend with tripod and looking for trains, lol.
Anyway, this is a great classroom shot explaining dof, well done.
I took my 100x400 out this weekend. Used an extender and lost quality, AF and four hours. Regards Ron.

Bokeh - have not heard that term in quite a while. The artistic circles of light that appear when the image is out of focus.

The extender quality varies with camera body and lens. Canon recommends good L glass usually prime as oppossed to zoom lenses with max speed of at least 2.8. I can tell you working with the Rebel XT and the 100x400 zoom I can get closer, with less image quality and a F9 or F11 as my fastest aperature. Can't think when I would want that, maybe shooting the moon. No, I think bad pictures of Tom Cruise and his newborn may present an opportunity. lol

It´s not common with this use of dof .... in this category, but it works well and highlight the rails in a good way! I often go there my self, it´s a fascinating place! Nice capture!!

That's exactly what I see in it. I had shot a few with different DOF, and this one gave the rails a quality that was unlike the rest.
