About I found a little one-pieced silver coloured suit right next to this little skull. There were quite a few glowing lumps of strange metal nearby as well. Maybe I should get in touch with Scully and Muldar?

Hello Andre
excellent composition, the tonal colors and the lights are perfect.

Thanks Gustavo,
Thanks for coming back for a visit.

Thanks Gianpaolo,
I went a little dark on the shadow area on purpose. I think it adds to the mood nicely.
Thanks for visiting and commenting.

Hi Andre,

Quite the dark and moody shot here! Looks like you nailed the exposure on the skull in both the shadows and light. Great tones too. Hmmmm

If the suit doesn't fit, I would suggest discarding it. Might be a good time to cash in the shiny stuff, but who knows?

Cheers!
Kes

good job!

Tony Smallman   {K:16130} 4/20/2006
Nice illumination and well thought out.By keeping the other objects around the skull to a bare minimum and darkening the background the main subject really absorbs the viewer's attention.Excellent still life.
Regards, Tony.

Dave Stacey   {K:120485} 4/20/2006
A very good still life, Andre! Great lighting and effects, it does have a somewhat eerie presence!
Dave.

Kathy Hillard   {K:25721} 4/21/2006
Great tones, Andre! The darkness creates a real sense of mystery, yet the light on the skull sets it off well. Nicely done!
Kathy

Thanks Kes,
It's amazing what you find walking in the woods!
I'm pretty sure it's a racoon. But it could be an alien :)

Hi Tony,
Thanks for the comment and for visiting my portfolio. As I said to Gareth earlier, it's always nice to see some different people commenting on your work.
You mentioned the illumination.... I've been trying a process in (Photoshop) lately that really enhances the illumination and softens at the same time.
I got the image the way I liked it in the B&W conversion first. Then I made a duplicate copy of the image. I blurred the duplicate copy with a light gaussian blur. Then I merge the two images together and adjust the opacity bar so that the original image shows through nicely. Finally I deselect and save the image.
I find this process gives me a nice surrealistic, halo like glow on the finished image. It takes a little practice and you can over do it. But when it comes out right, it's worth it.
Check my image "Tangled Up In Blue" or "Marsh Afternoon" for a stronger but similar effect.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 4/21/2006
Hi Dave,
I think that eerie presence is probably due to that process that I've been using. (merging a blurred layer with the original image) It adds a very nice glow when you turn the opacity down to a low percentage on the merged, blurred layer.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 4/21/2006
Hi Kathy,
Thanks for the comments. This one was done with that blurred layer merge process that I've been fooling around with lately. Very light on the blur and very light on the opacity, when merged together. Like you say, a nice little glow from the light that compliments the darkness.
Andre

Nice use of b/w. You captured the contrast well. I also like the use of the square in this shot. Nice work.

Rina     {K:26830} 4/21/2006
That method works better than ever on a subject like this. The skull is positively incandescent. Half expecting to see glowing green eyes appearing slowly from within the sockets.... Have you got hold of Scully and Muldar yet?? They still may be lurking around Jim's way... ;)

Just love this Andre and I'm flicking it over to my favourites. Can't wait to show my son, he loves creepy like me!

Thanks for the feedback my latest. Thought I'd resist the urge to fiddle with it until I heard from a few experts first!

Cheers
Rina.

An excellent air of mystery to this Andre and the postwork technique lends itself extremely well to this compositon. The exposure is spot-on with busloads of detail in the lights and darks. I love the texture in the foreground wood and the lighting has a suitable ghostly atmosphere to it. Well done to you my friend....AWESOME work. Very best wishes as always....Ray

Tony Smallman   {K:16130} 4/21/2006
Hi Andre, thanks for taking the time to explain the making of this image;an interesting technique which I've read about before but must now try out for myself!I do quite a lot in Ps. as you'll have seen in my portfolio and still life work is something I very much enjoy. The lighting effect in Tangled up in Blue is most effective.
Cheers, Tony....I'm off to take some photos now!

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 4/21/2006
Thanks Brad,
And thanks for visiting my portfolio.

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 4/21/2006
Hi Rina,
Yes, I was very pleased with the results on this one. I think the trick was not to lay it on too thick. Over-doing the glow/blur can sometimes put people off because of the obvious manipulation. I think when it is a bit more subtle, like in this image, viewers can sense there is something not quite normal, but can't put a finger on it.

The dark-side stuff can be fun, I like flipping back and forth for some variety in the portfolio.

I'll be going back to investigate with Scully myself on the weekend.....We don't need that Muldar guy ;)

Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 4/21/2006
Thanks Ray,
I was very pleased with the result on this one. Like you say, the subject matter fits the process nicely. I think the subtle glow/blur is the key with this one.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 4/21/2006
Hi Tony,
I read about this technique a few weeks ago in an older book on photo-impressionism. The article talked about snapping two images of the same scene on a tripod. One in focus and one out of focus. Then, sandwhich them together. (slides or develope) Anyway, it seems similar results can be had fairly easy in Photoshop, or another program.
In the past, with film, I have made several kinds of multiple images, but never thought to do any with the same negative out of focus.

Wow nice exposure Andre. Love the tones too. Good job and what a find!

Rashed Abdulla   {K:154808} 4/23/2006
Very great image, wonderful lighting , details and contrast, beautiful tone and very well presented.
All of the best my friend

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 4/23/2006
Hi Jeanette,
Thanks for the visit and comment. I'm very pleased with the outcome of this shot and a few others that I've used a similar process on.
Andre

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 4/23/2006
Thanks again Rashed,
I think I like this one just a little better than the second one. Not sure why exactly.
Andre

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/25/2006
Hi Andre,

well that's the cool dark stuff =) You did well in adding the blur here. Makes the thing even more mysterious. nice one!

best wishes,
Thilo

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 4/25/2006
Thanks Thilo,
I thought the subject matter really suited the process very well in this case. What I forgot to mention is the fact that this skull is only about 100mm from the nose to the back of the skull. It is most likely from a Racoon.
The one I did after this one is much larger (700mm approx)
Andre

Fadel J   {K:13695} 6/3/2006
Very creepy image and great find Andre, love the tones and the smoothness of it a lot!

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 6/3/2006
Thanks Fadel,
I was experimenting a little with some blurred layers on this one and a few others. I think it worked out pretty well on this one.
How is your film course working out? Have you printed much yet?
Andre

James Cook   {K:37073} 9/22/2006
This look is peculiar (in a good way). I do wish the skull were not over-exposed (or is it?). The unusual look draws me in and asks that I look longer.

Andre Denis   {K:56069} 9/23/2006
Hi James,
As I recall, It was taken on a very sunny day. There was quite a bit of glare on some parts of the skull. It was not intentionally over exposed. But I may have done some little manipulations in Photoshop that added to that look.
Andre

James Cook   {K:37073} 9/23/2006
Yeah, the glare probably produced the over-exposed region. No big thing. Keep it up.
