About Manu, Michael Kanemoto and myself have each worked on one single image, each of us adding his personal touch to that same image without being aware of what the others were doing to the same original photo. I'll leave it up to you to determine who created which image - for now.

We're looking for feedback, so please share your thoughts, and let us know which digigraphy you prefer. Also, your feedback in what each of these photos tells you would be very much appreciated.

It needs no explanation that each of these three shots were digitally manipulated, and quite heavily so. I'll post the original photo under each of the three images.

Cheers,

Hugo

Here's the original file Manu, Michael Kanemoto and myself started with.

Original Lensbaby photo

the worst of the lot

Manu     {K:13094} 4/21/2006
I agree with Michael...hahaha...only kidding..!

Each box has a wonderful mixture of colors and tones and textures, I was wondering if the arrangement could be worked on...maybe a more scattered approach. Breaking them up into 24 cards as though they had been thrown on a table...I'm all for chaos myself.

Good fun, Mike..

I agree too, The chaos rules! Too scary, and way too close to my own pattern of thinking....:) Can't get more funky than this....:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo, I've been looking at the colaborative collages for several days now. Each one has its merits, but this one is my favorite. There is a symmetrical assymetry that I find appealing. Somewhat reminiscent of a quilt, each piece is intriguing on its own, but the most interesting view is of the sum of the parts.

I'm not 100% sure of what you did beyond building blocks of images together. It seems fairly clear that there is more to it than that!

Great collaboration! You, Manu, and Michael should all be proud of your work.

Joggie van Staden   {K:41275} 4/23/2006
The whole is more than the sum of the parts - very creative manipulation - very abstract . A celebration of colour, angles and texture. Almost like some painters throwing the paint over their shoulder at the canvas. I like it! My guess is that Manu is the author. Well done!

My eyes linger over every image with hilights here guys.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184981} 4/24/2006
Hey Mike,

I really like what you've done to the image. As there isn't a single thing in focus in the original, I think this is a really clever way to go about it.

It's rather subjective, and I always find it difficult to assess an abstract collage on it's feel and atmosphere, but I'd say you stayed pretty close to the real "feel" of the original.

The arrangement of style and shapes is great, and results in a very well balanced overview. I do think you went a bit rough on the photoshop, leaving some "killer white lines", if you know what I mean. When I do something like this, I always use a common, less descriptive colour (deep blue, the average of the tones in the original or black) that way any mismatches in the squares are masked.... Sure you already knew this, and you had to do this in a rush, because I rushsed you... Again....

Cheers,

Hugo

Mary -

Hugo seems to have revealed each of the authors. I made this abstract. I can post a progression of the deconstruction of the photograph if you want to see how this "quilt" was built.

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17525} 4/24/2006
Absolutely, Michael. I would love to try my hand at something similar with some of the flower images I've amassed. I've got some ideas, but would really value direction on how to achieve this from someone who has already tried it.

Thanks very much!

Michael Kanemoto   {K:22103} 4/25/2006
Mary:

Here is the progression of my slice - basically the trickiest was creating an Adobe Illustrator mask as 60 degree triangles from the point of focus due to the lensbaby blur.

After that, it was basically cutting and moving chunks of the image around in an aesthetically pleasing way.

Progression

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17525} 4/25/2006
Thank you so much, Michael, for posting this progression. I had to study it a bit, but I now think I understand what you did. I did not realize initially how much each slice had been managed in PS (saturation, hue, etc.) I have something in mind that uses a similar technique on a series of images. I'll have to play with it a while to see if it works.

Thanks again. What fun you each must have had on this collaboration!

Hi Hugo:

What a wonderful idea to collaborate in this way.

The rapid-fire succession of abstractions of color and form is a visual feast. I like the fact that much is left to the imagination.

Though each panel is unique, they harmonize in a beautiful procession of images.

Good work to all.

Best wishes, Kurt

Chris Boivin   {K:9030} 6/12/2006
This is a great idea Hugo. It's nice to see how each photographers unique perspective comes through. This reminds me of a kaleidoscope. I think I would like to try this with some of my friends... thanks for the idea.
Cheers,
Chris
